Muleriders drop pair of games at Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas baseball team dropped a split doubleheader on Friday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to Washburn in the first game and a 10-5 loss to Arkansas-Monticello in the night cap.

GAME 1 – vs. (RV) Washburn
TEAM RECORDS
(RV) Southern Arkansas Muleriders (3-2)
(RV) Washburn Ichabods (4-1)

PITCHING DECISIONS
W – Nick Silva (2-0)
L – Connor Wells (0-1)
S – NONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Ichabods grabbed a 2-0 lead early thanks to a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the fifth, a single run was pushed across to make it 3-0, Washburn.
  • SAU found it tough going offensively against the Washburn starter Nick Silva as the right-hander did not surrender his first hit until the Mulerider eighth when Blake Hall singled up the middle with two outs. The Hall single moved Michael Page to third base as he had walked in the at-bat prior, and prompted a move to the bullpen by Washburn.
  • The Ichabod reliever issued a walk to the first batter he faced, but worked out of the bases loaded jam with a foul out for the third out.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Washburn pushed across two more runs to make it 5-0 Ichabods on a single to left-centerfield by Riley Krane.
  • In the top of the ninth, SAU quickly loaded the bases with no outs thanks a hit-by-pitch to Cory Gallegos and singles by Jackson Murphy and David LaFleur. After LeFleur's single, SAU plated their first run of the game on a Mark Fontenot single down the right field line.
  • The Muleriders then scored two more runs, but made outs on the plays as well as James Trevanion grounded out to the pitcher for a RBI followed by a sacrifice fly out to left field off the bat of Page.
  • Despite the tying run being at the plate, Washburn held on for the win after inducing a groundout to third base.

GAME 2 – vs. #31 Arkansas-Monticello
TEAM RECORDS
(RV) Southern Arkansas Muleriders (3-3)
#31 Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (2-2)

PITCHING DECISIONS
W – Landon McFadden (1-0)
L – Dalton Algiene (1-1
S – Jared Libke (1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Boll Weevils surged ahead of SAU, 4-0, with a four-run bottom of the first inning.
  • In the top of the third, SAU cracked the scoreboard with a bang as Trevor Rucker belted a two-out solo homerun out to left-centerfield.
  • Following the Rucker blast, the Muleriders managed to load the bases without the benefit of a hit thanks to a walk, an error and a hit-by-pitch. Another free pass followed in the Fontenot at-bat as he drew a base on balls to force home Jacob Richardson for the Muleriders' second run of the inning.
  • An inning later, the Muleriders struck for two more runs to knot the game at four-all. Both runs scored on an error by the Boll Weevils' second baseman on what was the back-half of a potential inning-ending double play. On that play, Hall and Page scored.
  • After holding the Boll Weevils off the board in the fourth, SAU came back in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead as Fontenot singled home Trevanion. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Boll Weevils benefited from a pair of Mulerider errors and scored twice to flip the advantage in their favor, 6-5.
  • That score held until the bottom of the eighth when the Boll Weevils scored four runs of insurance on three hits to make it a 10-5 game.
  • SAU went down in order in the top of the ninth as the Boll Weevils secured the non-conference victory.
