Lady Muleriders fight to force fifth set but fall short at SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Lady Mulerider Volleyball team rallied five sets with Southwestern Oklahoma (30-28, 16-25, 20-25, 25-20, 7-15) on Friday night but fell short, eventually suffering the hard-fought match loss.
 

OF NOTE 
  • Seniors Alli O'Banion and Alexia Southern carried the offensive power for SAU with a combined 31 kills in the match, (O'Banion 16, Southern 15).
  • O'Banion's 16 kills was a new season-high as she had three more kills than her previous record of 13 this season.
  • Defensive Specialist Whitney Brown set a new career-high in digs with 32 in the match joining Alexa Bass with a new career-high of 23 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern Arkansas had the early advantage in the first set as they jumped out to a 4-0 start and extended that into their biggest lead of the set, 14-6. SWOSU rallied to tie the set at 24-all prompting four additional tie-scores to reach the eventual final result of 30-28 in SAU's favor.
  • The Bulldogs answered in the second set with a constant scoring advantage over SAU that tied the match at 1-all after a 25-16 victory.
  • The third set was a close contest as the scores were tied nine times before the Bulldog's ran away with the momentum after the final knot at 16-all to take the set win, 25-20.
  • The Lady Muleriders bounced back from a 4-12 deficit in the fourth set as they went on 16-8 run to tie the score at 20-all. Back-to-back kills from Morgan Gross and O'Banion put SAU ahead 22-20 before they were aided three attack errors from SWOSU to force a fifth set with a victorious 25-20 final decision.
  • The Lady Muleriders were unable to withstand a 10-1 Bulldog run early in the fifth set as they eventually suffered the loss 7-15.

  • The Lady Muleriders travel to Alva, Oklahoma tomorrow in a conference match against Northwestern Oklahoma State at 1 P.M.
