No. 20 SAU Softball sweeps DH from Southeastern Oklahoma behind pair of shutouts

DURANT, Okla. – Behind a combined 25 hits and a pair of shutouts in the circle, #20 Southern Arkansas swept Friday afternoon's Great American Conference road doubleheader with Southeastern Oklahoma State by scores of 6-0 and 8-0 and in the process tightened their grip of the second seed in the league standings.

The Lady Muleriders (36-7, 28-7 GAC) are just two victories away from breaking the single-season wins record set back in 2014 (37-26). SAU pushed their road record to 12-5. Highlighting the afternoon was sophomore Brooke Goad who hit three homeruns to push her season total to 20 and senior Chelsea Jordan added a pair of homeruns and led SAU with five total hits.

In the series opener, SAU received six strong innings from starter Kimmy Beasley (18-3) as she scattered four hits and three walks, while striking out five batters. Beasley worked around runners at third in the first and second innings, before allowing just a pair of hits over her final four innings of work. Peyton Jenkins worked the seventh as she pitched around runners at first and second to secure the win.

At the plate, Southern Arkansas collected a run in the second inning, two runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth as five players tallied a pair of hits each. A two-out double by Summer Ehrig in the second inning produced the series' first run as Darian Harris scored. Harris would again score in the fourth inning as an RBI-single by Jordan gave SAU a 2-0 lead.

Two batters later in the fourth inning, Liz Hudgins singled home pinch-runner Kim Whelehon giving SAU a 3-0 advantage. In the fifth, Goad hit a solo homerun as the Lady Mulerider lead increased to 4-0, before a two-run jack from Harris in the sixth inning concluded scoring for SAU in the 6-0 win.

It was much of the same for the Lady Muleriders in the second game as they produced their 17th run-rule victory of the season with an 8-0 win in six innings in game two. Kaylee Garner (18-3) picked up her 14th complete game of the season as she tossed six innings, scattering four hits and a walk, while striking out six.

Maddie Dow opened scoring for Southern Arkansas with an RBI-single of Hudgins in the first inning, before solo home runs by Goad and Jordan in the third and fourth innings respectively put SAU up 3-0. Taylor Guin added an RBI in the fourth inning as she knocked in Ehrig to give SAU a 4-0 lead.

With Garner in control, Jordan and Goad again left the yard with solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings respectively. It was an Ashton Atwell double that plated Harris and Whelehon in the sixth that put SAU up 8-0 and in line for a run-rule victory.

League-leaders in team fielding percentage, Southern Arkansas was again perfect behind their pitching staff as they produced 13 innings of error-free softball, while offensively forced Southeastern Oklahoma to use four pitchers in each game.

Behind Jordan in total hits, were Goad and Harris who collected four each, while Dow and Hudgins added three hits apiece. Goad scored three runs and Jordan added a pair, while both players led SAU with three RBI.

The Lady Muleriders will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled for high noon.
