DURANT, Okla. – Saturday's Great American Conference doubleheader between #20 Southern Arkansas and Southeastern Oklahoma State consisted of plenty of offense as the two teams combined for 46 hits in the two games that saw the Lady Muleriders out-slug the Savage Storm 15-10 in game one to earn the series win, before dropping the series finale 9-2 to conclude their final regular season road trip of the year.
The Lady Muleriders (37-8, 29-8 GAC) remain comfortably in second-place in the league standings with this weekend's series win over SOSU (27-19, 23-13 GAC), who sits in third-place; four games of ahead of Harding in the loss column. With Saturday's win, the Lady Muleriders tied the single season wins record that was established by the 2014 team (37-26) that won the GAC Tournament.
SAU provided game one starter
Kaylee Garner (19-3) with early and continual run support as they plated three runs in the first inning, four in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the seventh with the final runs providing cushion for a slim 11-9 lead after six innings.
Garner tossed 4.2 innings allowing nine runs on 11 hits, while fanning six, but was able to get out of innings when she need to the most.
Peyton Jenkins entered in relief of Garner with one out in the fifth and she scattered a pair of hits over the final 2.1 innings, while cooling the Southeastern Oklahoma bats to pick up her second save of the season.
Six pitchers saw time in the circle for the Savage Storm in large part to an SAU offense that banged out 15 hits led by
Liz Hudgins' four, followed by three from
Darian Harris and a pair of hits apiece by
Ashton Atwell and
Summer Ehrig. Hudgins accounted for 4 RBI in game one and Harris and Ehrig added three RBI each. After three homeruns yesterday,
Brooke Goad received nine straight walks in the DH to keep her bat at bay.
In the second game,
Chancy Williams received her first start of the year in the circle and surrendered eight runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of action, before Jenkins entered to record the final two outs for SAU.
After a
Tyler Casada sole home run in the second inning opened scoring, SOSU followed with three runs in the fourth inning, before Goad scored in the fifth on a double play. Southeastern Oklahoma added a run in the fifth and four in the sixth inning to take avoid a series sweep.
The SAU bats cooled slightly in the second game as they collected six hits, led by Hudgins and
Maddie Dow who tallied a pair of hits apiece.
Southern Arkansas returns to Magnolia for their final regular season series of the year as they host East Central in a four-game Great American Conference set beginning with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 22. Friday's twinbill will also serve as "Domestic Violence Awareness Game." Saturday's regular season DH finale will begin at high noon and also serve as Senior Day as nine Lady Mulerider seniors will be recognized prior to first pitch.
