MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas baseball team lost a pair of two-run games to Southeastern Oklahoma on Friday night at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field. The scores of Friday's doubleheader were 5-3 and 3-1.
In the opener, Southeastern (23-18, 18-8 GAC) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning as they platted four runs on two hits while also benefitting from a pair of SAU errors in the frame. The Savage Storm added a single run on a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning to put Southeastern up 5-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, SAU (25-15, 15-11 GAC) broke into the run column as
Billy Germaine belted a three-run homerun off the roof of the football concession stand beyond the left field fence at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field. Germaine's homer gives his 11 on the year and extended his team-lead in that category.
Following a scoreless top of the eighth pitched by reliever
Eric Schildt, SAU mounted a rally off of the Savage Storm's closer Brady Colbert in the bottom of the frame as the Muleriders had the tying run in scoring position with one out. Colbert induced a groundout back to him on the mound and then got a swinging strikeout to end the inning and escape the jam.
In the bottom of the ninth, Colbert retired the Muleriders in order to seal the win for the Savage Storm.
In the nightcap, Southeastern once again broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning on a RBI double from Brandon Grimsley, but SAU starter
Hunter Mayo pitched out of the inning only giving up the one run.
The Muleriders tied the game in the bottom of the third, however, as Germaine ripped a two-out single through the left side of the infield for his fourth RBI of the day.
In the top of the fifth, the Savage Storm struck for a pair of runs to go up 3-1 on SAU.
After a relatively quiet bottom of the fifth, SAU put together another rally attempt as they had the tying run on base following consecutive one-out singles from
Jackson Murphy and
Keaton Miller.
Following Miller's single, Southeastern turned to the bullpen and their closer Colbert once more and Colbert collected the next two outs in the inning without surrendering a run to keep it a 3-1 advantage for the Savage Storm.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Jake Tisevich singled up the middle with one out to bring the potential tying run to the plate and after an eight-pitch at-bat,
Trevor Rucker flied out to the warning track in left field. Colbert then got a swinging strikeout to end game two and give Southeastern the doubleheader sweep over the Muleriders.
The third and final game of the series is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the start of the game, however, the Mulerider baseball team will have its annual Senior Day Ceremony as eight seniors will be honored. Listed among those seniors are:
Justin Buchanan,
Jared Fielden,
Billy Germaine,
Travis Johnson,
Hunter Mayo,
Keaton Miller,
Jace Powers, and
Landon Simpson.
