MAGNOLIA, Ark. – In a rematch of the 2015 Great American Conference Tournament Championship, the Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider Volleyball team registered their best offensive output to this point in the 2016 campaign as they pushed Southwestern Oklahoma State to the brink, before falling in a back and forth five-set clash (24-26,
25-20,
25-16, 17-25, 12-15) inside the W.T. Watson Center on Saturday afternoon in Magnolia.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- A spirited match from the outset, both teams registered three sets with a .300 attack percentage or better, while combining for 135 kills on a collective 340 total attempts.
- Southern Arkansas dropped the opening frame 26-24 with the largest run for either team being three points as the first set was reminiscent of the two teams' last meeting in Hot Springs.
- In the second and third sets, the Lady Muleriders jumped out to leads of 9-3 and 11-4 respectively and used a solid defensive output to hold the Bulldogs to a combined hitting percentage of just .158 in those sets as they took a 2-1 match lead.
- Southwestern Oklahoma regained the momentum in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth frame after attacking at a clip of .400, while using a pair of late runs to pull away in a 25-17 set win.
- In the fifth set, SAU overcame an 11-8 deficit to tie the match set at a dozen points apiece, before a Kaitlyn Dillon service ace and a pair of kills from Carly Zak, the reigning GAC Player of the Year, iced the match in favor of the Bulldogs.
FOR SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
- Junior classmates Alexia Southern and Alli O'Banion each produced 17 kills, while senior Serena LeDuff added 16 kills. O'Banion attacked at an impressive game-high .484, committing just two errors in 31 total attempts. Southern followed suit with a swing clip of .359 (17-3-39) and LeDuff's 16 came at a rate of .341 (16-2-41).
- Freshman Katy Cooper logged career-highs in assists (51), digs (14), points (5.5) and kills (4) as she recorded her fourth career double-double.
- Senior Kaitlyn Reiner led SAU with 3.0 total blocks and three service aces. Junior Brittany Lampkin added a pair of blocks.
- Senior Paige Mays led four Southern Arkansas players in double-digit dig totals with 19. Senior Hannah Rice joined Cooper with 14 digs and freshman Riley Marsh recorded 13 digs for the second-consecutive match and finished with 10 or more for the sixth time this season.
FOR THE OPPOSITION
- Southwestern Oklahoma attacked a five-set clip of .294.
- Zak, the league leader in kills per set coming into today's game at 4.20, registered a double-double at the expense of 29 kills and 16 digs, while hitting .388 in 67 total attempts.
- Jill Green and Kelsi Schmidtberger produced 17 and 10 kills respectively.
- Kayla Hebert assisted on 67 of SWOSU's 71 kills and also led the club with a pair of service aces.
- Dillon recorded a game-high 23 digs and Kodee Avery chipped in with 11 digs.
OF NOTE
- SAU's attack percentage of .325 (64-12-160) and total kills (64) are the highest marks for the program this season. The .325 attack percentage is the highest against a Great American Conference opponent since September 29 of last season when the club hit .402 in a three-set sweep of Arkansas-Monticello, while the 64 total kills are the most for SAU since recording 67 kills on October 16 of last season in a home loss to Oklahoma Baptist.
