Lady Muleriders down Central Baptist in straight sets

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider Volleyball team picked up their seventh win of the 2016 season and fifth in straight sets by downing Central Baptist (25-9,25-9,25-15) on Tuesday night in a non-league contest inside the W.T. Watson Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Southern Arkansas cruised in the victory courtesy of an attack percentage of .376 (42-7-93).
  • The Lady Muleriders scored the first nine points of the opening set and constructed a lead of 20-4 behind a powerful hitting percentage of .478 (13-2-23).
  • It was much of the same for Southern Arkansas in the second set as the club opened up scoring on an 8-2 run that soon blossomed into a 20-7 lead as SAU posted consecutive sets with a swing clip of .400 or better with a .412 (15-1-34) hit percentage.
  • Central Baptist claimed their only lead of the contest by scoring the first point of the third set, before Southern Arkansas used a 7-1 run midway through the frame to distance themselves and pull away to take the set and the match.
 
FOR SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
 
  • Middle Hitters Brittany Lampkin and Kaitlyn Reiner led Southern Arkansas with eight kills apiece, while junior Alli O'Banion chipped in with five kills. Reiner led SAU with 10.0 points.
  • Eleven Lady Muleriders recorded a kill in Tuesday night's win.
  • Senior Paige Mays recorded her 19th game this campaign with at least 10 or more digs as she produced a game-high dozen. Hannah Rice chipped in with eight digs and freshman Whitney Brown added five.
  • Freshman setter Katy Cooper found herself in every major stat category as she collected a game-high 28 assists, while also adding four digs, a pair of kills, one block assist and one service ace.
  • In her collegiate debut, freshman Lauren Strader registered four kills in seven total attempts for an attack clip of .571, while adding a dig and an assist.
 
FOR THE OPPOSITION
 
  • The Mustangs attacked at -.024 with their highest set percentage being .088 in the final frame.
  • Gloria Bell, Cameron Roberts and Kelsy Knox combined for a dozen kills led by Bell's five. Bell also contributed with six digs.
  • Hope Johnson led the Mustangs in assists with nine, while Kobie Hartman chipped in with five.
  • Payton Cope paced CBC with 10 digs and Lenee Gibson added nine.
 
OF NOTE
 
  • Southern Arkansas improves to 21-0 against non-NCAA opponents since the program became a charter member of the Great American Conference in 2011.
  • It was the third match of the season and second in a row that Southern Arkansas posted an attack percentage of .300 or better with Tuesday's output of .376 becoming a season-high.
  • The last time SAU recorded back-to-back games with a .300 attack percentage or better was on October 23 and October 25 of 2014 when the Lady Muleriders earned a pair of 3-0 victories over Texas College (.391) and Grambling State (.350) respectively.
