Lady Muleriders suffer setback in Shawnee; fall in four sets to Oklahoma Baptist

Despite defeat, Southern Arkansas puts together yet another solid offensive performance

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The front half of their late season Oklahoma road swing did not go quite as planned as the Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider Volleyball team suffered a setback on the road in Shawnee as league-leading Oklahoma Baptist topped SAU in four sets (21-25,25-17,19-25,18-25) in a Great American Conference affair inside the Noble Center on Thursday night.

RECORDS

Southern Arkansas (7-14, 2-6 GAC)
Oklahoma Baptist (13-8, 7-1 GAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the opening set, Southern Arkansas fought back from a pair of three-point deficits late in the contest and after a timeout down 19-16, the Lady Muleriders manufactured a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 20-19. SAU was unable to keep the momentum going as OBU closed the first frame on a 6-1 run.
  • After receiving attack errors in her first two attempts of the game, junior Alli O'Banion rattled off nine straight kills including eight in the second set as Southern Arkansas stormed to 25-17 set two victory on a .355 attack percentage (14-3-31) to even the match at a set apiece.
  • The Lady Bison bounced back in the third set for a 25-19 win that included swinging .464 (16-3-28); their highest clip of the match.
  • SAU led 4-0 and 8-4 early in the fourth set, before the OBU tied the frame at 10 points each. The Lady Bison claimed the momentum after the tie as they used a 13-5 run to increase their advantage to eight as they claimed the fourth set and the match.
  • The match saw 11 ties and five lead changes.
  • Southern Arkansas out-dug (68-56) and out-assisted (53-51) the Lady Bison, while OBU recorded eight more total attempts and two more total kills. Oklahoma Baptist won the block statistic (3-1) and recorded four more service aces (9-5).

FOR SOUTHERN ARKANSAS

  • Three Lady Muleriders recorded ten or more kills led by 15 kills from O'Banion and senior Serena LeDuff, while classmate Kaitlyn Reiner chipped in with 10 kills. O'Banion swung at an impressive .462 (15-3-26), while the latter two players each hit .286.
  • Freshman Katy Cooper recorded her second career 50-plus assist game and second in the last three games as she dropped an even 50 assists; one shy of her career-high, while adding a dozen digs in registering her fifth career double-double.
  • Senior Paige Mays and grad-athlete Hannah Rice each produced a game-high 16 digs, while Rice led SAU with a pair of service aces.
  • Junior Brittany Lampkin and O'Banion each led SAU with three block assists, with LeDuff and Reiner added two block assists apiece.

  • Sharpe finished with a double-double after recording a team-high 13 digs. Sierra VeraCruz and Darby Maclea combined for 22 digs led by VeraCruz's dozen. Maclea paced the Lady Bison with five service aces.
  • Cadyn Laing registered five block assists.

OF NOTE

  • Southern Arkansas falls to 0-2 against the Lady Bison all time as OBU claimed a five-set victory last year in Magnolia and to 0-5 on the road this season.
  • With eight league games remaining, SAU is currently ninth in the Great American Conference standings with a chance to gain ground toward the eighth and final seed tomorrow afternoon in Bethany.
  • The Lady Muleriders' attack percentage of .266 on Thursday night was their second highest swing clip against a GAC opponent this year. SAU hit .325 in a five-set loss to Southwestern Oklahoma last Saturday.
  • In 16 games in the month of September, Southern Arkansas hit an average of .139 with 23 attack errors per match. Through five matches in the month of October, the Lady Muleriders are averaging a highly improved hit clip of .279, while lessening their average attack errors per match to just 15.
  • A large part of that success has been the play of O'Banion who has rocked October by hitting an average of .460 (61-14-111). She has registered a swing clip of .300 or better in four of five matches, while collecting just seven such performances in the 16 matches played in the month of September.
