Lady Muleriders handle Williams Baptist in three sets

Southern Arkansas puts together complete game for fifth win of season

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider volleyball team picked up their fifth win of the season by handling Williams Baptist College in straight sets (25-16,25-19,25-17) on Tuesday evening inside the W.T. Watson Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • An 8-2 Southern Arkansas run in the opening frame stretched a 14-11 SAU lead into a 22-13 advantage that the Lady Muleriders would use to claim the first set.
  • In the second set, SAU began on a 5-1 run, before the Eagles battled back to tie it at 10 apiece. A 5-2 run by WBC game themselves a three-point lead before Southern Arkansas' Paige Mays registered three service aces in a row on an 8-1 run that pushed SAU to a lead they would not surrender as they entered match set.
  • The Lady Muleriders cruised early in the third set, before suppressing a 6-1 sequence by the Eagles as WBC pulled to within two at 16-14. A 9-3 run from Southern Arkansas gave the club their second home win of the season and fifth of 2016.
  • Southern Arkansas hit .267 as a team in 101 total attacks. That percentage is the highest for SAU since September 10 of this season when the club swept Missouri Southern with an attack clip of .298.
 
FOR SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
 
  • Senior Serena LeDuff produced a game-high 16 kills; her eighth game this season with 10 or more kills. LeDuff also registered a season-high attack percentage of .467 (16-2-30). It was also the most kills for a Lady Mulerider in a three-set match in 2016.
  • Alli O'Banion added 11 kills and Kaitlyn Reiner chipped in with seven.
  • Freshman Katy Cooper collected 36 assists in her ninth start of the season. Cooper has recorded 15 or more assists in 10 games this season and has five matches with 35 or more assists.
  • Ten players recorded a dig led by Mays' 11. Freshman Riley Marsh added seven and LeDuff found five.
  • Mays also led SAU with four service aces as she tied her season high set back on September 3 against Union, while bringing her 16-game total to 23. Cooper and classmate Whitney Brown each added two service aces apiece. SAU finished with 10 service aces as a team to tie their season-high set on September 9 vs. Lindenwood.
  • Freshman Seven Powers paced Southern Arkansas with 3.0 total blocks, while Reiner added a pair.  
 
FOR THE OPPOSITION
 
  • Rachel Pirtle led the Eagles with seven kills, while Madison Laubach and Brooke Howell added four kills each.
  • Jordan Harvey paced WBC with 11 assists and Taylor Barton chipped in with seven.
  • Audra Nailling produced a game-high 5.0 total blocks.
  • Jessica Baugh collected nine digs to lead the Eagle backline.
 
OF NOTE
 
  • Southern Arkansas improves to 20-0 against non-NCAA opponents since the program became a charter member of the Great American Conference in 2011.

  • The Lady Muleriders remain at home and get back into Great American Conference play on Friday, October 7, as they welcome in Northwestern Oklahoma State for a 7 p.m. first-serve. Southern Arkansas lost a five-set match to the Lady Rangers on the road in Alva in the two clubs only meeting last season.
