Mulerider Athletics mourns loss of former hall of fame coach Monroe Ingram

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas University and its athletic department are saddened by the loss of former head baseball and basketball coach and 2006 Hall of Fame inductee Monroe Ingram, 78, who passed away on June 5 in Little Rock.
 
Memorial services for the late Ingram will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock this upcoming Thursday, June 11 beginning at 11 a.m. Funeral arrangements will be conducted by Ruebel Funeral Home of Little Rock with additional information regarding the funeral coming at a later time (http://www.ruebelfuneralhome.com).
 
One of the handful of legendary coaches in the storied history of Mulerider Athletics, Monroe Ingram coached basketball at SAU for 17 years from 1980 to 1997 and prior to that, he was the Mulerider baseball coach from 1971 to 1977. 
 
In his basketball coaching career, Ingram posted a 257-193 record which are the second most wins in school history. On the diamond, he led the Muleriders to a 107-86 mark over seven seasons to give Ingram a combined win-loss record of 364-279 across both sports. 
 
Ingram, who was associated with SAU from 1970 until his retirement at the end of the 1996-97 season, served as an assistant to the late and legendary W.T. Watson until 1980 when Ingram took over for Watson who became full-time athletics director at SAU.
 
Ingram would go on to win the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) basketball championship in 1989-90, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 17 championships in 1982-83 and 1989-90.  Additionally, Ingram was twice named both the AIC and NAIA District 17 Basketball Coach of the Year.
 
As a baseball coach, Ingram led the Mulerider baseball team to AIC championships in 1974, 1975, and 1977.  In 1975, Ingram's pitching staff would lead the nation (NAIA) with a 1.16 earned run average. Named the AIC Baseball Coach of the Year three times, Ingram would also earn NAIA District 17 Baseball Coach of the Year plaudits in 1977. Additionally, Ingram would coach two AIC All-Star teams in games against the Arkansas Travelers, a Class AA professional baseball team in Little Rock.
 
In his collegiate playing days, Ingram was a center for the University of Central Arkansas, earning All-AIC honors in 1957-58, and 1959-60 while scoring 1,062 career points in 51 games for a 20.8 ppg average.
