GAME NOTES | SAU | SE

Leading Off
The Southern Arkansas baseball team enters the Great American Conference Tournamet with a 35-15 overall record and are the No. 1-seed after capturing the regular season crown in the final weekend of the season. In that weekend, the Muleriders needed to sweep rival Arkansas-Monticello to even have a chance at the title, but also
needed some help around the league; series losses by Harding and Ouachita Baptist. All of those scenarios played out, giving SAU their thrid regular season title in the four-year history of the GAC.

The Southeastern Oklahoma baseball team enters the GAC Tournament with a 17-23 overall record and are the No.6-seed. Last weekend, the Savage Storm took the first two games from rival East Central to clinch a berth into the tournament. It will be SE's first apperance in the GAC Tournament since 2012.

Statistically, the Muleriders are hitting .300 as a team and have five starters hitting .300 or better. Chris Quinn currently leads the team in average at .344 (45-for-131).
Billy Germaine leads the team in RBIs with 59 and homeruns with 11.

In terms of pitching, SAU has a 3.60 team ERA. Landon Simpson leads the staff in wins with seven victories. Simpson also has the lowest ERA among starters at 2.64
and has thrown a GAC-best four shutouts. Among relievers, Travis Johnson sports the lowest ERA at 2.12. In 29.2 innings pitched, Johnson is limiting opponents to a .234 batting average against and has 21 strikeouts. The Muleriders have also got big innings from Hunter Mayo and Colton Strother as the two are a combined 10-1 with a 3.55 ERA and 75 strikeouts.

For SE, they hit .299 as a team and have five starters over .300. Brandon Grimsley leads the team in hitting at .387 (43-for-111). Grimsley also leads the team in homeruns with 10 and in RBIs with 39. In terms of pitching, SE has a 7.16 team ERA. Brady Colbert leads the team in wins with five and also paces the pitchting staff in ERA at 4.53. Among starters, Nick Johnson has the most wins with four and the lowest ERA at 6.03.

Regular Season Champs
F or the third time in the four-year history of the Great American Conference, the regular season baseball championship resides in Magnolia with the Southern Arkansas baseball team. This season, unlike the previous three championship campaigns, was arguably the most impressive regular season run as the rain-soaked spring that wrecked havoc on the GAC schedule forced the determination of the regular season championship to come down to winning percentage in the GAC and not necessarily the most wins.

Despite that, SAU was able to play all 30 GAC scheduled games while also posting a .667 winning percentage in the league going 20-10 to finish with the higgest percentage mark in the GAC. An even more incredible note on the championship was the fact that SAU was third in the GAC going into the final weekend.

  • Colton Strother has pitched 21.1 innings over four apperances (two starts) and is 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA with 19 strikeouts.

All-GAC Honorees
SAU was once again well-represented in the first round of post-season honors as seven Muleriders were named to All-GAC teams following the conclusion of the 2015 regular season. Receiving the highest recognition were juniors Billy Germaine (OF) and Landon Simpson (SP) as each earned All-GAC First-Team honors. Next were juniors Travis Johnson (RP) and Carver Rademacher (UTL) with All-GAC Second-Team honors while seniors Chase Harvey and Korey Keith along with sophomore Trevor Rucker hauled in All-GAC Honorable Mention plaudits
