Leading OffThe Southern Arkansas baseball team enters play this weekend with a 26-13 overall record and are 13-8 in the GAC. The Muleriders are coming off of a 2-1 series win over Arkansas Tech this past weekend as well as an 8-5 mid-week, non-conference victory over Tech. At 13-8 in the GAC, the Muleriders are in second-place, three games back in the loss column to first-place Ouachita Baptist, but two games back in the win column of OBU.
The Southeastern Oklahoma baseball team enters play this weekend with a 13-18 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the GAC. This past weekend, the Savage Storm were off
from GAC play, but got in a pair of mid-week games against Oklahoma Christian and Rogers State, both losses. SE will enter the weekend having lost four-straight as
they dropped a doubleheader to Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Statistically, the Muleriders are hitting .296 as a team and have five starters hitting .300 or better.
Billy Germaine currently leads the team in average at .325 (41-for-126). Germaine also leads the team in RBIs with 40 and homeruns with nine.
In terms of pitching, SAU has a 3.44 team ERA and their three conference starters have ERAs in under 3.60.
Landon Simpson lead the staff in wins with six victories.
Simpson also has the lowest ERA at 1.51 and has thrown a GAC-best four shutouts. Among relievers,
Travis Johnson sports the lowest ERA at 1.85. In 24.2 innings
pitched, Johnson is limiting opponents to a .221 batting average against.
For SE, they hit .289 as a team and have six players over .300. Dylan Helms leads the team in hitting at .352 (37-for-105). Helms also leads the team in doubles with
12 and is tied for second in RBIs with 18. In terms of pitching, SE has a 6.73 team ERA. Brady Colbert leads the team in wins with five and also paces the club in saves
with three. Dylan Linke has the lowest ERAÂ among on the team at 4.27.
Preseason Favorites F or the fourth-straight year, the Southern Arkansas baseball team has been picked by the head coaches of the Great American Conference to finish the season as the top team in the league. The top-nod comes on the heels of the Muleriders' thrid-consecutive GAC Tournament Championship and also in the return of six All-GAC players from last year's team.
Reichstein Walks-Off OBUJunior outfielder
Byron Reichstein ended one of the wildest games of the season for the Muleriders this past Tuesday (3-17) against Ouachita Baptist as he hit a walk-off homerun the opposite way down the left field line. The homerun was the first this season for Reichstein.
Backend Bullpen StrengthThe Muleriders have received some strong outings out of the backend of their bullpen and in particualr from junior transfer
Travis Johnson. On the year, Johnson has appeared in 16 games, is 2-3 with six saves, has a 1.85 ERA, and is limiting opponents to a .221 batting average with 17 punchouts in 24.1 innings pitched.
Simpson National POWSouthern Arkansas junior right-hander
Landon Simpson was named as the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) National Pitcher of the Week (3-16) as it was announced by the NCBWA. The national honor for Simpson is the first in his career and comes as a result of his most dominant start of the season so far after he tossed a four-hit shutout while striking out a season-high 10 batters in game two of the series against Ouachita Baptist, an 8-0 SAU win. The shutout against OBU was Simpson's second this season and at the time lowered his season ERA to 1.89. Simpson currently ranks second in the league in ERA and has current ERA of 2.01
Germiane Heating UpSAU junior tranfer
Billy Germaine has really started to have his bat heat up over the past 10 games. In that time, Germaine is hitting .406 (13-for-32) with a pair of doubles, four homeruns and 14 RBIs. The increased run production and power during this stretch have brought Germaine's season totals to nine homeruns, and 40 RBIs, ranking him
second in the GAC in each category.
Stingy SimpsonSince being hit with his third loss of the season in a March 7 start against Northwestern Oklahoma, junior right-hander
Landon Simpson has been virtually impossible to score against. In the four starts since that NWOSU start, Simpson is 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA. His three wins were all shutouts and in 33.0 innings of work in those four starts, Simpson
has struck out 20 batters while walking just five and has limited opponents to a .190 batting average against.
