Box Score WINONA, Minn. - Homeruns by
Shelby Miller and
Maddie Dow to start the top of the first inning set the tone for the Southern Arkansas softball team as they played in their first-ever NCAA Regional Tournament game against top-seeded Winona State on Friday afternoon.
Despite taking the early lead, the Lady Muleriders (37-25) were unable to tack on any more runs as the Warriors (47-7) scored the next three runs in the game to come-from-behind and eventually escape with a 3-2 win. The loss forces the Lady Muleriders into an elimination game on Saturday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. against the loser of the Augustana and Missouri Western game, which is taking place later this afternoon.
Miller and Dow going back-to-back in the top of the first inning in Friday's game was reminiscent of the first game on Championship Saturday of the GAC Tournament for the Lady Muleriders when the freshman duo started that game with solo homeruns.
After going down in order in the bottom of the first inning and with SAU leading 2-0, the Warriors would begin their comeback in the bottom of the second.
In that inning, the Warriors would string together five consecutive flair singles as they pushed across two runs to knot the score at two-all. That would remain the score until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Warriors got a leadoff homerun by Jenny Nelson to make it a 3-2 game.
Now trailing by a run, the Lady Muleriders would pick up one-out singles in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to push across the tying run as they fell to Winona State by a score of 3-2.
