Shelby Shelton Set to Lead Next Chapter of Mulerider Softball

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas University's Director of Athletics Steve Browning has announced that Shelby Shelton has been named the next Mulerider Softball Head Coach.

"Mulerider Softball has become one of the premier programs in the country because of the high standards we have established both on and off the field," stated SAU Director of Athletics Steve Browning. "As we conducted this search, we were looking for a coach who believed in the same core values that define Mulerider Athletics, developing student-athletes who graduate, serving the community, and competing for championships. Shelby's vision and leadership philosophy align perfectly with those priorities. She has demonstrated the ability to build a winning culture while investing in the personal, academic, and athletic growth of her student-athletes. We are excited to welcome Shelby to Mulerider Country and are confident she will continue the tradition of excellence that Mulerider Softball has become known for."

Shelton becomes the seventh head coach in the program's history after spending the past six seasons at Paris Junior College, where she guided the Dragons from 2020 through 2026.

Shelton arrives in Magnolia with a proven track record of building and sustaining championship-caliber teams. When she took over at Paris Junior College in 2020, the Dragons had won no more than 10 games in any of the previous four seasons. Under her leadership, Paris transformed into one of the NJCAA's premier softball programs, earning four consecutive postseason appearances and establishing itself as a national contender. In the last five seasons, the Dragons have made it to the world series three times. Over the last two seasons alone, Shelton guided the Dragons to back-to-back 50-win campaigns, including a program-record 52 victories in 2026. The Dragons also secured consecutive trips to the NJCAA National Tournament, culminating in a fourth-place national finish this past season.

"Throughout this process, it became clear that Shelby possesses the leadership qualities, competitive drive, and genuine care for student-athletes that are essential to sustained success," exclaimed Browning. "Her enthusiasm for Southern Arkansas University, her appreciation for the foundation that has been built here, and her vision for the future of our softball program made a tremendous impression. We believe she is uniquely positioned to build upon our success and lead Mulerider Softball to even greater achievements in the years ahead."

Under Shelton's leadership since 2023, Paris produced eight National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Americans, eight NFCA All-Region selections, two NJCAA All-Americans, 18 NJCAA All-Region honorees, and 30 All-Conference performers. Her players also collected numerous major individual awards, including the 2025 Conference and Regional Player of the Year, the 2025 NFCA Catcher of the Year, the 2023 Conference and Regional Player of the Year, and the 2023 Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Team success was equally impressive. The Dragons never finished lower than second in Region 14 over the last four seasons and captured conference championships in both 2025 and 2026. Shelton's efforts earned her Region 14 Coach of the Year and Mid-South A District Coach of the Year honors in each of the last two seasons. In 2025, she also led her staff to NFCA NJCAA Division I Midwest Regional Coaching Staff of the Year recognition.

"I would like to sincerely thank Steve Browning and Dr. Bruno Hicks for this incredible opportunity to lead the Southern Arkansas softball program. This is one of the top (NCAA) Division II softball programs in the country, and I am honored to become its next head coach," remarked Coach Shelton. "I look forward to building upon the success and strong foundation already in place while continuing to find ways to elevate it in the community, classroom, and on the softball field. With the outstanding resources available here, I believe we have everything needed to compete for a national championship and achieve sustained success at the highest level."

Excellence extended well beyond the softball field under Shelton's leadership. She cultivated a strong culture of academic success at Paris Junior College, highlighted by all 23 members of the 2026 roster earning NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors. Additionally, the Dragons posted a team GPA of at least 3.8 in each of the last three academic years.

Community engagement was also a cornerstone of Shelton's program. Her teams regularly participated in local Chamber of Commerce events and volunteered throughout the community, serving at homeless shelters, food pantries, the Boys & Girls Club, and area schools on an annual basis.

"I owe a great deal of gratitude to Paris Junior College and the amazing players, staff, and people there that helped us build something incredible the past six years," emphasized Coach Shelton. "I look forward to us doing the same here at SAU! Go Muleriders!"

Prior to her tenure at Paris Junior College, Shelton spent the 2020 season as an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech University. Although the Bulldogs' campaign was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program entered the season with significant momentum after capturing a conference championship and earning an NCAA Regional appearance the year before.

Before joining the Louisiana Tech staff, Shelton spent five seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Howard College, from 2015-19. During her time with the Hawks, she played a significant role in recruiting and player development while helping guide the program to four consecutive conference championships, four straight regional titles, and four national tournament appearances. Shelton also helped recruit and coach numerous All-Americans, including the 2019 NFCA Junior College Player of the Year.
