Bats come alive in 15-10 win over Ouachita Baptist to keep Muleriders alive in GAC Tournament

Box Score ENID, Okla. – Less than 24 hours after falling 2-1 in a tight pitcher's duel, the Southern Arkansas baseball team saw their offense erupt for 15 runs on 15 hits as they beat No. 6-seed Ouachita Baptist by a score of 15-10 to stay alive in the 2014 Great American Conference Baseball Tournament.

The offensive onslaught for the Muleriders (35-17) began in the second inning when they plated three runs to take a 3-0 lead. The first of those runs came home on a wild pitch uncorked by the Tigers' starter Luis De Jesus. The other two runs were driven in by William Townsend as he doubled down the left field line, scoring Josh Rodriguez and Justin Buchanan.

After a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth by OBU's Keegan Ghidotti made it a 3-1 game, the Muleriders came back out in the next half inning and exploded for eight runs to stretch the lead out 10 runs, 11-1.

In that inning, the Muleriders would get a bases-loaded walk, three consecutive run-scoring doubles, and a two-run homerun. The first of those doubles was bases-clearing knock by Buchanan and the homer came off the bat of Trevor Rucker.

A RBI single by Ryan Dardenne in the top of the sixth made it a 12-1 game, but a three-run homerun for the Tigers in the bottom of the frame brought OBU to within eight runs, 12-4.

After trading runs in the seventh, the Muleriders added two more to their total in the eighth to extend their lead back out to 10 runs, 15-5. A grand slam homerun by the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth highlighted their five-run frame to cut the deficit in half.

Despite the late rally attempt, the Muleriders were able to secure the win as reliever Jared Webb got a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

The Muleriders will now play top-seeded Arkansas Tech in an elimination game on Monday, May 5 with a scheduled first-pitch time of 3:30 p.m.
