Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The No. 12-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team closed out their 2014 regular season on a high note on Saturday afternoon as they shutout rival and No. 25-ranked Arkansas-Monticello by a score of 3-0 in the second game of the day's doubleheader.
In the opener, the Muleriders (34-16, 18-12 GAC) suffered another difficult loss as the Boll Weevils (33-13, 22-8 GAC) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Staking the Muleriders to that 2-0 lead were RBIs from
Tyler Cameron and
Telvin Darden. Cameron's RBI came on a single second inning while Darden's came on a double in the ninth.
Those two runs were in support of SAU starter
Timothy Buchanan, who had thrown eight shutout innings while scattering five hits and striking out six. Buchanan, who tossed a no-hitter in his last start, returned to the mound looking for his second-consecutive shutout. A leadoff walk and a single to start the bottom of the ninth, however, put the tying run in scoring position and chased Buchanan from the start.
In the next at-bat following the pitching change, the Boll Weevils would get a clutch hit from Taylor Caruthers as he doubled home both runs to knot the game at two-all. Four batters later and with two outs, the Boll Weevils would win the game on a single to left field by Alex Lang.
The dramatic walk-off win was the second-consecutive for the Boll Weevils who picked up a 5-4 win in 10 innings on Friday.
Despite the two heart-breaking losses, the Muleriders would come back in game three of the series and played and pitched well once again.
After neither team scored through the first three innings, the Muleriders would break the scoreless tie in the fourth on RBI singles by
Justin Buchanan and
Josh Rodriguez. Two innings later, Rodriguez would collect another RBI as he singled home Buchanan to make it a 3-0 game in favor of SAU.
The three runs of support proved to be all that game-three starter
Yumezo Densaki would need as the right-hander would go on to shutout the Boll Weevils, holding them to just five hits while striking out eight in seven complete innings on the mound.
The dominant start for Densaki against the Boll Weevils on Saturday was his second such outing. Back in early March, Densaki would throw seven scoreless innings against UAM in a mid-week non-conference game. In two appearances/starts against UAM, Densaki is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 14.0 innings.
With the regular season now at an end, the Muleriders will turn their attention towards the upcoming Great American Conference Tournament, which will be held once more at the David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, Okla.
The Muleriders, the two-time defending tournament champions, will enter the 2014 tournament as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 4 seeded Harding University in the opening round. That game will be the final one of the first day of the tournament and has a scheduled first-pitch time of 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Be sure to check
