Furious comeback attempt falls short for No. 5 Muleriders in rubber game vs. No. 6 Delta State

Box Score

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The No. 5-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team fell into a deep hole through just an inning and a half of Sunday's rubber game against Delta State as DSU scored 13 runs in the top of the second inning. Southern Arkansas would battle back in a major way however, as they out-scored Delta 10-1 over the remainder of the game, but the furious comeback effort would fall short as DSU defeated SAU by a score of 14-10 at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.

The comeback charge for the Muleriders (30-13) started in the bottom of the fifth inning as they broke up the shutout and scored seven runs to make it a 13-7 game.

In that inning, the Muleriders would draw three consecutive walks to start the inning as they chased DSU starter Drew Milligan from the game. Milligan's replacement would not fare well as Carver Rademacher hammered a two-run double to centerfield to plate the first two runs for the Muleriders. Another walk was then issued to Justin Buchanan in the next at-bat to keep the bases loaded with no outs. This time, Korey Keith drove in a pair as he found a hole up the middle of the infield for a two-run single. Two batters later, with the bases still loaded and one out, William Townsend cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-centerfield.

With the their once 13-run lead suddenly cut to six, the Statesmen (28-8) would pick up a single run in the top of the sixth to make it a 14-7 game in favor of Delta State.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Muleriders would once again put together a strong rally attempt as they loaded the based with one out. This time it was Tyler Cameron who unloaded the bases as he crushed a double to centerfield, making it a 14-10 game.

The Muleriders would continue to threaten in the eighth and ninth innings as their leadoff man reached in both innings, but the Statesmen's final pitcher of the afternoon, Nick Goza, would not allow any more runs as he closed out the 14-10 wild win for Delta State.

The Muleriders will back in action this upcoming weekend as they will play their final home series of the regular season against Southern Nazarene. That series is scheduled to start on Friday, April 18 at 6 p.m. at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.
