ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas senior shortstop
Tyler Cameron went 4-for-5 with four RBIs as he helped lead the No. 4-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team to a 7-4 win over Henderson State on Friday afternoon at Clyde Berry Field.
Cameron's productive day at the plate began in the first inning as he singled to left field. In the fifth Cameron got the Muleriders (17-4, 7-3 GAC) on the board as he picked up his first RBI of the day on a single that scored
Korey Keith. In the seventh, with the Muleriders trailing 4-1, Cameron knotted the game at four-all as he cleared the bases on a triple to centerfield. In the next at-bat, Cameron came around to score the go-ahead run as
Jon Phillips singled to right field.
The four-run seventh inning that gave the Muleriders a 5-4 lead got SAU starter
Dylan Lynn off the hook, and in line for the win as the Reddies (5-14, 4-6 GAC) had taken a 4-1 advantage on Lynn (3-1) through the first six innings. Lynn, however, would not return to the mound once the Muleriders took the lead as he gave way to reliever
Blake Sullivan in the bottom of the seventh.
Sullivan would make quick work of the Reddies in that frame as he retired the side in order. The Reddies would try to put together a scoring rally off of Sullivan in the eighth as they picked up consecutive two-out singles, but on the second of those singles, the Muleriders cut down a runner at third base to end the inning without allowing a run.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Muleriders would add a couple of runs of insurance as they took a 7-4 lead into the final half inning. In that top of the ninth, the Muleriders loaded the bases with one out and a hit-by-pitch to
Ryan Dardenne forced in a run. A batter later,
Justin Buchanan singled to shortstop to plate the second run.
Sullivan would then return to the mound in the bottom of the ninth looking to close out the game. Two quick outs put Sullivan one out away from picking up his first collegiate save. A two-out walk delayed matters, but a harmless flyout to centerfield sealed the win.
The Muleriders and Reddies will conclude their series on Saturday afternoon as they will play a doubleheader starting at noon.
