MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas softball team clubbed out four homeruns across both games of Tuesday's conference doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello at Blossoms Field. Three of those bombs came in the second game as SAU powered their way to a 9-8 come-from-behind victory to claim a split in the twin-bill.
The first of the Lady Muleriders' (18-14, 13-9 GAC) four total homeruns on Tuesday came in the very first at-bat of the day as
Brooke Goad homered to left-centerfield. The leadoff homerun for Goad in the opener made her the single-season record holder in homeruns at SAU. It also marked the fifth time this season that she has led a game off with a round-tripper.
The Cotton Blossoms (20-15, 11-11 GAC) would get that run back, however, in the bottom of the first on an infield single. UAM then scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.
SAU starting pitcher
Shelby Miller would help her own cause in the top of the third as she doubled home a run to make it a 4-2 game. The Cotton Blossoms would extend their lead in the bottom of the next inning on a two-run homerun by Brittany Eitel. Four more runs came across in the bottom of the fifth as the Cotton Blossoms forced the eight-run rule to win the opening game.
In the second game, the Cotton Blossoms would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, however, Goad found her power stroke once more as she hammered a two-run homer out to right field to cut the deficit in half.
An inning later, in the top of the sixth, the Lady Muleriders tied the game up at four-all as
Chelsea Ivy belted a two-run homerun out to left-centerfield. Three batters later,
Maddie Dow gave the Lady Muleriders a 7-4 lead as she went the other way for a three-run homerun to right-centerfield.
The Cotton Blossoms would rally for four runs to take the lead, 8-7, in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Muleriders would show a great deal of resolve and answered back with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the seventh to take a 9-8 lead.
Miller then entered the circle for the Lady Muleriders in the bottom of the seventh looking to close out the game and force the doubleheader split. A quick 1-2-3 inning for Miller got the job done as she secured her sixth save of the season. Miller is now the career record-holder in saves at SAU.
The Lady Muleriders will now prepare for a pivotal four-game road series against Southeastern Oklahoma over the weekend. That series is set to begin on Friday, March 28 at 1 p.m. in Durant, Okla.
