RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Southern Arkansas freshmen
Brooke Goad and
Shelby Miller placed their names atop of several records on Saturday as they helped the Lady Muleriders to a pair of 4-2 wins over Arkansas Tech to force a series split with the Golden Suns. The effected records in the game were the single-season homerun record and the single-season and career saves record. All three records were either matched or surpassed in the second game on Saturday.
The first record change came in the top of the seventh inning with the Lady Muleriders (17-13, 12-8 GAC) holding on to a 3-2 lead. That is when, Goad, with no one on and two outs, gave SAU a run of insurance as she belted her 12th homerun of the season. That blast by Goad ties the single-season record, which was set by Erin Litvik in 2006.
Goad's record-tying homerun also helped lead to the second and third record changes as Miller entered the circle looking to nail down the save. A leadoff walk and a one-out single would make things interesting as the Golden Suns (13-15, 5-11 GAC) sent the potential game-winning run to the plate. Miller would bear down from there, however, as she got a pair of fielder's choice groundballs to secure the save. That save is Miller's fifth on the year and gives her the single-season record while also tying her for the most saves in a career. Former Lady Mulerider Cassie Blackwood (2002-05) was the previous record-holder for both records.
Miranda Cuff would earn the win in that second game as she started in the circle and worked six innings, scattering six hits, allowing two runs, walking two, and striking out two.
Audrey Farfan,
Taylor Guin, and
Chelsea Ivy would all drive in a run that game as well.
In the first game of the day, the Lady Muleriders got a great starting pitching performance from Miller as she allowed just two runs and struck out seven batters over seven innings of work. The two runs off of Miller came in the bottom of the sixth with the Lady Muleriders already up 4-0.
The first two of SAU's runs came in the top of the second inning as Farfan and
Darian Harris each doubled home a run. The final two runs were scored in the top of the fourth inning. The first of those runs came home on a double steal as Ivy swiped home while Harris took second base. During that same at-bat
Brittney Johnson drove in Harris on a single up the middle.
The Lady Muleriders will be back in action on Tuesday, March 25 as they will travel to Monticello to take on Arkansas-Monticello in a rare GAC mid-week doubleheader. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
