No. 4 Muleriders shutout Union twice in non-conference doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 4-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team received tremendous pitching on Tuesday afternoon as four pitchers combined to shutout Union University in both ends of the non-conference doubleheader which was played at Fesmire Field on the campus of Union.

In game one, a 9-0 SAU win, Colton Strother started for the Muleriders (13-3) and worked five shutout innings, allowing just four hits, walking one, and striking out one. The sixth inning belonged to Jared Webb, who worked around a leadoff single in his lone inning of work. The seventh and final inning in game one was pitched by Sheldon O'Dell. O'Dell would work quickly in the frame as he started the inning with a pair of first-pitch outs before retiring the side in order to secure the shutout win for SAU.

In game two, a 5-0 SAU win, the Muleriders only had to call upon the services of Yumezo Densaki as the junior right-hander had the Bulldogs' (4-8) number when it mattered most. Densaki, who recorded his first shutout as a Mulerider, would strand eight runners in the game while piling up nine strikeouts. Four of those strikeouts were pressure-packed as they came with at least one Bulldog runner on base and each K would end an inning, preserving the shutout.

While the Mulerider pitchers were holding the Bulldogs off the scoreboard, the Mulerider hitters were putting runs on the board and doing so with several crooked-numbered innings as well.

The first of those crooked-numbered innings came in the top of fourth inning of game one. Already leading 1-0, the Muleriders added three runs on three hits to open up a 4-0 lead. In that inning, SAU got a RBI from Jon Phillips on a single through the right side and Carver Rademacher's two-RBI double to left field accounted for the other two runs.

An inning later, the Muleriders ripped the game wide open as they scored five runs on six hits to make it a 9-0 SAU lead. All five of those runs that inning were scored before the Bulldogs recorded an out. Four of those runs were driven in by Drew Benefield and Tyler Cameron as each had two-RBI singles up the middle. Benefield later scored on a wild pitch to account for the other run.

In the second game, the Muleriders scored a pair of runs in the second inning and added three more in the top of the fourth. All five of the runs would be unearned as the Muleriders were able to take advantage of three errors in those innings.

The Muleriders will now turn their attention towards conference play as they will host Ouachita Baptist in a three-game set starting on Friday, February 28. First-pitch in that game is slated for 6 p.m.
