Lady Muleriders use eight-run fifth inning to lift themselves to come-from-behind win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – There must be something in the air when the Southern Arkansas and Midwestern State softball teams meet on the diamond this year. On Saturday, the two met up for the second time this season, and for the second time, both teams would have run outputs that ran into double figures.

Fortunately for Southern Arkansas, the similarities would not end there it was the Lady Muleriders (5-5) who would come away the victors once more, this time, 13-11 winners in a regulation seven innings.

In the two games played between SAU and MSU, both teams have combined for 63 runs on 72 hits. 12 of those combined hits have left the yard, with the Lady Muleriders being responsible for seven of the bombs. While it doesn't appear that much effective pitching was being done in these games, SAU pitcher Shelby Miller has picked up the win in each game and sports a comparatively miniscule 3.72 ERA.

On Saturday, Miller came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out in the third inning with the Lady Muleriders down 10-2. The first batter Miller faced walked on four pitches to force in a run make it an 11-2 MSU lead. After that, however, Miller went into shutdown most and as was literally unhittable as she did not allow a run over the final 4.2 innings of the game.

Miller's dominance in the circle from the third inning on allowed the Lady Mulerider offense to make their comeback effort. That furious charge would begin to take shape in the top of the fourth inning when the Lady Muleriders plated a pair of runs to make it an 11-4 game.

In the next inning, the Lady Muleriders would continue their comeback push and even turned up the intensity of it as they sent 12 batters to plate and scored eight runs to take a one-run SAU lead, 12-11.

The scoring in that inning was kick-started by Kim Whelehon as she drove in a pair of runs on a no-out, bases loaded single. Two batters later, Brooke Goad blasted a one-out, three-run bomb to right-centerfield, making it an 11-9 game. Consecutive singles by Maddie Dow and Miller followed to put traffic back on the base paths with one out.

Following a flyout for the second out of the inning, Audrey Farfan singled to right-centerfield to score pinch-runner Mackenzie Spanko, making it an 11-10 game. In the next at-bat, Chelsea Ivy completed the furious comeback and put the Lady Muleriders up by a run, 12-11, as she doubled to left-centerfield, scoring Farfan and Miller.

The Lady Muleriders would add a run of insurance in the top of the seventh inning to push the game it its eventual final of 13-11.

The wild win for the Lady Muleriders gave them their first win in the Midwestern State Invitational as they lost both games played on Friday and dropped a 5-3 decision to Rogers State in their first game of the day on Saturday.

The Lady Muleriders will now prepare for Great American Conference play as they will hit the road to Alva, Okla. to take on Northwestern Oklahoma in a four-game series. The first two of those games will be played as part of a doubleheader on Friday, November 21. First-pitch that day is scheduled for 2 p.m.
