WICHITA FALLS, Texas – A six-run top of the first inning by the Cameron softball team proved to be too much to overcome for Southern Arkansas as the Lady Muleriders eventually fell to the Aggies by a score of 9-1 in five innings in the opening game of Midwestern State Invitational on Friday afternoon.
In that first inning, the first six batters in the Cameron order reached base against SAU starter
Shelby Miller as the Aggies (4-3) totaled three hits, a pair of walks, and reached on a fielding error. The big blow in the frame was a grand slam by Aggie first baseman Sonora Zukerman to make the score 6-0.
Following that homerun,
Taylor Clifton came on in relief of Miller (1-2) and eventually worked out of the first without surrendering any more runs. Clifton would come back in the second inning and hold the Aggies off the board, but a three-spot in the third pushed Cameron's lead to 9-0.
The final two innings in the circle belonged to
Miranda Cuff and the freshman held the Aggies scoreless while allowing two hits and striking out a pair.
The Lady Muleriders would manufacture their run in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Maddie Dow led off and singled down the left field line.
Lindsey Wallace would come on as a pinch runner for Dow and Wallace promptly took second base on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. A couple pitches later, Wallace came around to score as Miller singled sharply up the middle.
The Lady Muleriders will return to diamond later on Friday afternoon as they play Northeastern State. First-pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
