WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas volleyball team took a break from Great American Conference play to take part in a tri-match with Williams Baptist and Bethel College on Monday night in Walnut Ridge. The Lady Muleriders (9-5) would come away with a win against Williams Baptist in their first match, but would fall to Bethel in the nightcap.
In the match against Williams Baptist, the Lady Muleriders used 18 kills to power their way to a set one win, 25-19. The Lady Eagles (9-5) then rebounded in the second set, 25-17, to even the match at one-all. In that second set, the Lady Muleriders managed just six kills while committing a match-high nine attack errors.
Set three swung back in the favor of SAU as the Lady Muleriders notched double-digit kills once more en route to a 25-15 set win. With a lead in the match, the Lady Muleriders maintained a solid offensive attack in the fourth set as they totaled 12 kills and just five attack errors. SAU would eventually take the fourth set 25-22 to earn the match win over Williams Baptist.
Individually against Williams Baptist, Cambria Martin led the team in kills with 10 while Courtney Geesing and Amanda Monge were not far behind as each had nine kills. Setter Gabby Clark would record a double-double against Williams Baptist as she led the team in assists with 34 and was second in digs with 13. Leading the team in digs was Lauren Woods as she came away with 20.
As a team, the Lady Muleriders had 14 block assists and four block solos for 11.0 total blocks. Geesing led the team with three block solos while Martin, Monge, and Logan Tolbert each had three block assists to lead the team.
Not long after their win against Williams Baptist, the Lady Muleriders were back on the court to take on Bethel in the nightcap in hopes of a sweep on their day. Unlike their match against WBC, however, the Lady Muleriders were not able to get their offense rolling consistently against Bethel. For the match, the Lady Muleriders hammered home 24 kills, but committed 19 errors as well.
That relatively high number of errors would help propel Bethel a three-set sweep over SAU, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19.
In the match against Bethel, Monge led the team in kills with seven. Clark and Woods led the team in assists and digs respectively once more as Clark had 22 assists and Woods had 13 digs.
The Lady Muleriders will next be in action on Friday, October 4 at 6 p.m. as they will play host to Southwestern Oklahoma inside the W.T. Watson Center. They will remain at home the following day as they will host Northwestern Oklahoma at 2 p.m.
