MAGNOLIA, Ark. – A go-ahead solo homerun by
Darian Harris in the fifth inning of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader helped propel the Southern Arkansas softball team to a 7-5 win as they earned a split on the day and also for the series.
In the opener, the Lady Muleriders (23-19, 15-11 GAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings as they scored a pair of runs in the first and a single run in the third.
Sarah Higginbotham provided the two runs in the first inning as she hammered the first pitch she saw out on a line to left-centerfield.
Courtney Johnson accounted for the other run in that stretch as her groundout in the third scored
Kelsey Fisher.
After being held off the scoreboard through the first four innings, the Crimson Storm (14-26, 7-20 GAC) managed to put together a rally off of SAU starter
Hanna Gill as they scored a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. An inning later, the Crimson Storm scored two more runs on three more hits as they captured their first lead of the game at 4-3.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Muleriders scored the tying run as Johnson doubled home
Mackenzie Spanko after Spanko doubled in the previous at-bat. The Lady Muleriders would then strand Johnson at second base as SNU's Maci-Brooke Lambert come on in relief and struck out the next two batters to escape the inning.
Neither team would score in the eighth inning, but Southern Nazarene grabbed a one-run lead in the top of the ninth as Megan Blevins hit a solo homerun out to centerfield. That homer would prove to be the difference as the Lady Muleriders were turned away in the ninth.
In the nightcap, the roles were virtually reversed as the Crimson Storm jumped out to the early lead, only to have the Lady Muleriders mount a comeback and register a go-ahead homerun before eventually winning.
After falling behind 4-0 over the Crimson Storm's first two at-bats, the Lady Muleriders got a RBI single by
Brittany Wood for their first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Two innings later, Wood sparked a three-run inning as she doubled to left field to lead off the fourth. Four batters later, Spanko drove in a pair of runs on a single while Johnson followed with a RBI single to knot the game at four-all.
In the next inning,
Darian Harris powered the Lady Muleriders to a lead as she turned on the first pitch she saw for a solo bomb out to right field.
Taylor Guin would add another run in the frame as her single to right field scored Fisher.
The two teams would trade single runs in the sixth inning as the margin remained two runs in favor of the Lady Muleriders. After coming on in relief in the second inning, Gill avenged her earlier loss as she pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win.
The Lady Muleriders will now be on the road for the remainder of the regular season with their next conference action coming at Monticello as they will take on Arkansas-Monticello in a four-game set starting on Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 p.m.
