CLEVELAND, Miss. – A doubleheader sweep of Delta State on Wednesday afternoon snapped the Southern Arkansas softball team's six-game losing streak and returns the Lady Muleriders back to their winning ways.
In the opener, the Lady Muleriders (25-25) came from behind to pick up a 3-1 win thanks to solid starting pitching from
Hanna Gill and clutch hitting from
Lauren Witzke,
Kelci Garza, and
Sarah Higginbotham.
Gill, who would go on to win her 18th game of the year, surrendered a run in the bottom of the second inning when the Lady Statesmen (16-27) capitalized on leadoff double. After that run, however, Gill was virtually unhittable as she scattered just two hits over the final five innings.
With Gill pitching well, the Lady Mulerider offense started to get to the Lady Statesmen starter Miller Maddox in the fourth inning. In that inning, the Lady Muleriders knotted the game at one-all as Witzke came up with a two-out knock to centerfield to score pinch-runner
Chio Samayoa.
Two innings later, another clutch two-out hit would give the Lady Muleriders the lead as Garza found a hole through the right side of the infield to score
Darian Harris. Much of the same happened in the seventh inning as the Lady Muleriders provided Gill another run of insurance on a two-out RBI single by Higginbotham.
Staked to a 3-1 lead, Gill made quick work of the Lady Statesmen in the bottom of the seventh as she retired the side in order to secure the win. For Gill, the win on Wednesday puts her on the cusp of a milestone as she is now tied for the most wins in a career at SAU with 39.
Having taken the second game of the series, the Lady Muleriders were now in search of the series victory with a win in the rubber match.
Just Gill turned in a solid pitching performance, game two starter
Taylor Clifton was sensational as well as she limited the Statesmen to no runs on just four hits over six innings of work.
Clifton, who went on to earn her sixth win of the season, was given a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when, with two outs,
Taylor Guin was able to stay in a rundown long enough to allow
Courtney Johnson to score.
After the Lady Statesmen put the tying run on base via a leadoff hit-by-pitch from Clifton, Gill was summoned from the bullpen to close out the game. As she did in the previous game, Gill retired the three batters she faced in the seventh inning as she notched her second save of the season.
The Lady Muleriders will now turn their attention to their final conference series of the season as they will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on Ouachita Baptist in a four-game set that is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m.
