Lady Muleriders fall short at Delta State

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Despite a homerun from Darian Harris in the top of the fifth inning, the Southern Arkansas softball team was unable to overcome an early 2-0 deficit as they fell just short against Delta State by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

The two runs for the Lady Statesmen (16-25) came as single runs in the second and third innings. In the second inning, DSU's Taylor Holland led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Three batters later, Brook Cline drove in Holland on a two-out single down the left field line.

In the third inning, the Lady Statesmen put the leadoff batter on base once more as Kassidy Tally singled up the middle. Three batters later, Tally scored on a double-steal attempt.

Trailing 2-0 through the first four innings, the Lady Muleriders (23-25) got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Harris led off with a homerun to right field. The homerun was Harris' fifth of the season.

After giving up the bomb, however, Lady Statesmen starting pitcher Brittany Gonzalez would induce a pair of pop outs and then work around a two-out double by Mackenzie Spanko to escape the inning without further damage.

The Lady Muleriders would record one more hit in the game as Gonzalez worked her way toward the complete-game win. SAU's Hanna Gill would get hit with the loss as she allowed the two earned runs in six innings of work.

These same two teams will hit the diamond tomorrow afternoon and take on each other in a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
