Lady Muleriders suffer series sweep against Arkansas-Monticello

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTICELLO, Ark. – After dropping both games of yesterday's doubleheader, the Southern Arkansas softball team suffered similar results in Sunday's doubleheader as Arkansas-Monticello defeated the Lady Muleriders by scores of 6-2 and 1-0.

As they did in the opener yesterday, the Lady Muleriders (23-24, 15-15 GAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the Cotton Blossoms (26-20, 12-10 GAC). In Sunday's opener, the Lady Muleriders took the 2-0 lead after scoring a single run in each of the first two innings.

Also similar to the first game on Saturday, SAU starting pitcher Hanna Gill was able to make the 2-0 lead last until the bottom of the fourth inning. In that inning, the Cotton Blossoms scored a pair of runs to knot the game at two-all. Both of the runs for the Cotton Blossoms in the inning came on a two-run homerun from Brittany Eitel.

An inning later, the Cotton Blossoms broke the game open as they scored four runs on six hits to take a 6-2 lead. That four-run fifth inning would prove to be the difference in the game as the Cotton Blossoms would go on to win the first game by a score of 6-2.

Unlike yesterday's nightcap, Sunday's second game was a brisk pitcher's duel that only took 55 minutes to complete.

In that game, the Cotton Blossoms were the first to register a hit as they got a leadoff single in the second inning. An inning later, the Cotton Blossoms would scratch across the games' only run as they went on to win 1-0 to secure the series sweep over the Lady Muleriders.

SAU will hit the road once more during the week as they are set to travel to Cleveland, Miss. to take on regional rivals Delta State. The Lady Muleriders and Lady Statesmen are scheduled to play a three-game series starting at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th.
