Johnson homers in loss to Central Arkansas

Box Score

CONWAY, Ark. – In preparation for the stretch run of the regular season, the Southern Arkansas softball team used Thursday night as an opportunity to play up a division as they hit the road to take on the University of Central Arkansas. UCA would get the better of SAU, however, as the Bears won the game by a score of 9-1.

In the game, the Bears (26-14) would grab an early 3-0 lead as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Hanna Gill. That score would hold until the top of the fourth inning when Courtney Johnson got the Lady Muleriders (23-20) on the board as she led off the frame with a homerun to right-centerfield.

The Johnson solo blast would prove to be the only offense the Lady Muleriders were able to generate as the Bears got a tremendous starting pitching effort from their ace, Kelsie Armstrong. In five innings of work, Armstrong would total 12 strikeouts while only allowing the Johnson big fly.

A solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth and a five-run fifth inning rounded out the scoring for the Bears as they ended the game with a 9-1 advantage.

The Lady Muleriders will now turn their attention towards the weekend as they will hit the road for a pivotal series at Arkansas-Monticello. That series is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m.
