Lady Muleriders flex offensive muscle in doubleheader sweep over Southwestern Oklahoma

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas softball team slugged four homeruns and scored 16 runs on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Muleriders took both games of a doubleheader against Southwestern Oklahoma at Lady Mulerider Field by scores of 5-1 and 11-4.

Sophomore catcher Sarah Higginbotham had one of the Lady Muleriders' (14-12, 6-4 GAC) powerful bats on Saturday as she belted a pair of homeruns and had four RBIs in SAU's 5-1 opening game win over the Lady Bulldogs (6-18, 2-8 GAC). Higginbotham would add another RBI in the nightcap as she totaled five RBIs for the day.

Darian Harris and Lauren Witzke wielded the other power bats on Saturday as each went deep in the second game. Witzke's homerun led off the third inning, and put the Lady Muleriders on the board after falling behind 2-0 the inning prior. Harris' blast was a two-run bomb that capped a six-run fifth inning that put the Lady Muleriders in firm control of the game as they eventually won 11-4.

Sophomore pitcher Hanna Gill was a direct beneficiary of the offensive outburst as the right-hander earned the win in each game. Gill got her first win of the day after going the distance in the opener. In that game, Gill allowed just one earned run on two hits while striking out 10 batters.

In the nightcap, Gill came on in relief of starter Taylor Clifton with the score was knotted at three-all in the fifth inning. Working in relief, Gill picked up where she left off as she struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Muleriders enjoyed their explosive offensive outburst in which they platted six runs on four hits.

The Lady Muleriders will now look to take the series as the two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, March 10th. The twin-bill is scheduled to start at noon.
