ALVA, Okla. – Grand slams from
Lauren Witzke and
Brittany Wood in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma powered the Southern Arkansas softball team to a 10-7 win, but NWOSU was able to stave off the sweep in the nightcap by taking the final game by a score of 9-7.
Wood, who hit a solo bomb in the second inning, was the first to clear the bases with one swing of the bat as her grand slam in the top of the fourth inning was a go-ahead shot that gave the Lady Muleriders (21-17, 13-9 GAC) a 5-2 lead.
Over the next two innings, the Lady Rangers (12-13, 7-7 GAC) would hold the Lady Muleriders off the board while platting five runs to take a 7-5 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.
In that inning, the Lady Muleriders found themselves quickly down to their final out as Lady Ranger starter Kellie Mason collected a strikeout and a pop up to begin the action in the seventh.
A single up the middle in the next at-bat by
Mackenzie Spanko sparked the Lady Mulerider rally. After
Courtney Johnson extended the game by reaching on an error by the third baseman,
Sarah Higginbotham singled up the middle to drive in Spanko and cut the deficit to 7-6. A hit-by-pitch to
Kelci Garza loaded the bases and set the stage for Witzke, who promptly unloaded the bases and pushed the Lady Muleriders on top by a score of 10-7.
Starting pitcher
Hanna Gill would come back in the bottom of the frame and made the lead hold up by working a perfect inning to secure the win as she improves to 15-7 on the year.
In the nightcap, the Lady Rangers staved off the series sweep by scoring eight runs over the third and fourth innings en route to a 9-7 win.
The Lady Muleriders will now head home for a four-game series against Southern Nazarene. That series is set to begin on Friday, April 5th at 1:00 p.m. at Lady Mulerider Field.
