ALVA, Okla. – Solid pitching and timely hitting was the formula for success on Friday afternoon as the Southern Arkansas softball team swept a doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma by scores of 1-0 and 4-1.
In the opener, starting pitcher
Hanna Gill tossed her second shutout of the year as she scattered four hits, walked one, and struck out three batters. Gill, who improved to 14-7 on the season, was given the lone run of support she would need in the top of the fourth inning when
Courtney Johnson blasted a one-out homerun.
In the second game of the day, the Lady Muleriders (20-16, 12-8 GAC) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning as they scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead. In that inning,
Brittany Wood and
Darian Harris came up with clutch at-bats as each notched two-out RBI hits. Wood's RBI knock was a double to centerfield that scored
Lauren Witzke and Johnson. Harris then drove home Wood with a single to right field.
Two innings later, the Lady Muleriders added a run of insurance to take a 4-0 lead as Harris hit a sacrifice fly to score Wood. In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Rangers (11-13, 8-6 GAC) notched their lone run of the entire day as they got a two-out RBI triple.
The triple came against Gill, but the run was charged to starter
Taylor Clifton due to a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. The charged run would be just a blip on the stat line for Clifton as she scattered three hits across her five innings of work and, in the process, improved to 5-8 on the year.
The Lady Muleriders will look to capture the series out-right as they will play another doubleheader against the Lady Rangers on Saturday afternoon starting at noon.
