Box Score
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Behind a complete-game on the mound by
Philip Menou and seven RBIs between
Brady Capshaw and
David Harris, the No. 17-ranked Southern Arkansas Muleriders won the opening game of the series against the No. 19-ranked Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys by a score of 9-5 on Saturday morning at Tech Field.
The Muleriders (20-9, 13-3 GAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but then fell behind 3-1 through three innings of play as the Wonder Boys (23-9, 10-3 GAC) got to Menou for three runs on five hits in the third inning.
After that rough third inning for Menou, the right-hander settled back in to his start as he threw three consecutive scoreless innings while scattering one base hit. While Menou was shutting down the Wonder Boys' lineup over the middle innings, his offense got rolling as they scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to give Menou a 7-3 lead. Over that stretch of offense, Capshaw and Harris combined for three hits and five RBIs.
In the seventh inning, the Wonder Boys would cut the lead down to 7-5 as they plated a pair of runs off of Menou, but the Muleriders would answer back in the top of the eighth inning as Harris and Capshaw traded RBI doubles to push the lead back out to four runs, 9-5.
Just as Menou did after giving up runs in the third inning, he would zone back in and Menou allowed just one hit over the final two innings as he finished off his sixth consecutive complete-game of the season.
The final two games of this series are scheduled to be played tomorrow as part of a doubleheader starting at noon.
