DURANT, Okla. – After dropping two close games to No. 2 Southeastern Oklahoma on Friday, the Southern Arkansas softball team suffered similar fates in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader as the Lady Muleriders lost by scores of 3-1 and 10-7.
In the opening game, the Savage Storm (19-4, 4-0 GAC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as they scored a run in the first inning and two more runs in the second inning.
The Lady Muleriders (12-12, 4-4 GAC), who out-hit the Savage Storm 11-6 in the opening game, got their lone run in the top of the fifth inning as
Darian Harris smacked a solo homerun out to right-centerfield to bring the game to its eventual final of 3-1.
Three Lady Muleriders had multiple hits in game one.
Lauren Witzke was 2-for-3 while
Courtney Hudgins and
Mackenzie Spanko both went 2-for-4.
In the first inning of the nightcap, the Lady Muleriders got a solo homerun from Spanko and a two-run bomb from
Sarah Higginbotham as they took an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, however, the Savage Storm scored a pair of runs to cut the Lady Mulerider lead down to 3-2.
A three-run top of the second inning which featured RBIs from Higginbotham and Spanko extended the Lady Muleriders' lead out to 6-2, but as in the first inning, the Savage Storm would respond in the bottom of the inning. This time, the Savage Storm would put up a five-run inning in the second as they jumped ahead of the Lady Muleriders by a score of 7-6.
The Savage Storm then built on that slim lead by adding three runs in the third inning to take a 10-6 lead. That score would stand until the seventh inning as neither team scored over the next three innings.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Muleriders would put together a threatening rally as they loaded the bases with two outs. Representing the tying run, Higginbotham kept the bases loaded as she delivered another RBI on a single to left field to score
Courtney Johnson. A strikeout in the ensuing at-bat, however, ended the threat and gave the Savage Storm the four-game series sweep.
Higginbotham was 3-for-8 with four RBIs across both games.
The Lady Muleriders will now host Southwestern Oklahoma in a four-game series starting on Saturday, March 9th at 1:00 p.m.
