ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas baseball team won their third conference series of the season as they took the nightcap of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist by a score of 8-2 after falling in the opener by a score of 2-1.
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader was a classic pitcher's duel as the two teams played into the seventh inning tied at one-all.
The Tigers' (9-8-1, 5-4 GAC) starting pitcher Davis Ward would be the first to surrender a run as the Muleriders (14-6, 8-1 GAC) manufactured a run in the top of the fourth inning. The Tigers would then score the tying run in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Muleriders' starting pitcher
Jon Mark Abbey.
After neither pitcher allowed a hit or a run in the sixth inning, the Tigers got to Abbey (3-1) for another single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Muleriders would threaten in the following inning as
William Townsend and
Jason Dahl started the inning with consecutive singles. Both Townsend and Dahl would advance 90-feet on a groundout by
Chris Quinn, but a foul out and a groundout ended the threat in the eighth inning.
Ward then came back out in the ninth inning and pitched a perfect frame to earn the complete-game victory.
Game two featured more success offensively for the Muleriders as they hammered out 14 hits on their way to the 8-2 win in the seven-inning series finale.
The offensive surge started early as the Muleriders exploded for four runs on five hits in the first inning. They would add three runs over the next two innings while the Tigers managed to score a run in the second inning to give starter
Philip Menou a 7-1 lead through three innings.
Menou (3-1) would make the most of the early run support as he would go the distance while allowing just one more run and striking out a total of 10 batters for the game.
Ryan Bell,
Tyler Cameron,
Brady Capshaw,
Jason Dahl,
David Harris, and
Chris Quinn all had multiple hits in the second game. Bell and Harris both had a pair of RBIs as well.
The Muleriders will now play a mid-week game against No. 1 Delta State at home. The top-25 tilt is scheduled to have a first-pitch at 6:00 p.m.
