MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas softball team came into Friday afternoon's doubleheader against Henderson State having won all 10 of their previous home games, but four homeruns across the doubleheader by Henderson gave the Lady Muleriders their first losses at home as they fell by scores of 4-3 and 8-4.
The first inning of the opening game served as foreshadowing for the power that the Lady Reddies (15-15, 9-5 GAC) would produce as Amber Wilburn hit a three-run homerun out to left field off of SAU starting pitcher
Hanna Gill. The Wilburn homer came after the first two batters reached base to start the game.
Gill would settle down after the first inning as she scattered two hits over the next three innings. In the top of the fifth inning, however, Wilburn would connect for another homerun, this one a solo homerun, to give the Lady Reddies a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Muleriders would get into the run column in a monster way as
Darian Harris crushed a two-run bomb out to right-centerfield to pull the Lady Muleriders to within two runs, 4-2.
That score would remain until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Lady Muleriders mounted a rally.
Lauren Witzke started the inning off with an infield single. Two batters later, Harris placed a double into left field to put the tying run in scoring position with one out. Following a strikeout,
Ashley Quintana would pitch-hit and drove in Witzke from third to bring the game to within a run, 4-3. The RBI single also sent the tying run to third base. A groundout in the ensuing at-bat ended the game, however, as the Lady Reddies held on for the one-run victory.
Game two had a much different start as starting pitcher
Taylor Clifton was able to retire the side in order in the first inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Muleriders gave Clifton a two-run lead as they scored a pair of runs on three hits in the inning.
After surrendering a run in the second inning, Clifton would lose the lead in the third inning as the Lady Reddies got a three-run homerun by Katey Gorsage as they went ahead 4-2.
A RBI single by
Kelci Garza in the bottom of the third inning cut the Lady Mulerider deficit to a run, 4-3, but the Lady Reddies would score four unanswered runs late in the game as they took a commanding 8-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brittany Wood drove in Harris in the bottom of the seventh inning to get the game to its eventual final of 8-4.
These two teams will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. at Lady Mulerider Field.
