MAGNOLIA, Ark. – After Harding hammered out 23 hits en route to a 13-11 win over Southern Arkansas in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader,
Philip Menou toed the rubber in the nightcap and the right-hander brought the Bisons' offense to a screeching halt as he threw a four-hit shutout while racking up 10 strikeouts to give the Muleriders the series win, 2-1.
Menou's dominant start was just what the No.17-ranked Muleriders (18-9, 12-3 GAC) needed as they were looking to secure their fifth series victory of the season after they come up short in the slugfest that was the day's first game.
Menou (5-1), who did not allow a base runner or a hit until the third inning, would be given the only run of support he would need back in the first inning as last night's walk-off hero,
David Harris, launched a solo homerun out to left field with two outs in the first inning. Menou would get another run of insurance in the third inning as
Johnny Garrett drew a bases loaded walk.
For Menou, he would have to showcase his best stuff in the late innings as the No.28-ranked Bisons tried to mount several rallies. The first serious rally attempt on Menou came in the fifth inning as he loaded the bases with two outs. Pitching with the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Menou would bear down and escape the inning unscathed as he struck out Victor Guerra swinging.
An inning later, the Bisons would put two runners on base with two outs, but as he did in the fifth inning, Menou got a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
After working through the fifth and sixth in nail-biting form, Menou would make sure there was no drama in the top of the seventh inning as he used just eight pitches and struck out the final two batters of the inning to close out his first shutout of the season.
Across the two games on Saturday,
Brady Capshaw wielded a hot bat as he was 6-for-8 with three doubles and five RBIs.
The Muleriders will next be in action on Tuesday, March 19th as they will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on Henderson State in non-conference action. First-pitch in that game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
