MAGNOLIA, Ark.
– The Southern Arkansas softball team totaled 23 runs as they swept a doubleheader against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff by scores of 18-3 and 5-1 in the Lady Muleriders' home-opener on Saturday afternoon at Lady Mulerider Field.

In game one, the Lady Muleriders (4-4) got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Over the next two innings, the Lady Muleriders' offense would explode for 10 runs on seven hits as they opened up an 11-0 lead after three innings of play.

The Golden Lions (0-2) of the NCAA Division I ranks finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning against the Lady Muleriders' starting pitcher Hanna Gill as UAPB plated a pair of runs on three hits. Before that inning, Gill had allowed just one hit and struck out six batters.

In the next half inning, the Lady Muleriders tacked on seven more runs to their total. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of Brittany Wood as she launched a two-run homerun out to left field.

UAPB got a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning for their third run of the game, but it would not be enough to keep the run-rule from coming into effect at the conclusion of the inning.

Gill (3-1) would earn the win for the Lady Muleriders as she went the distance and allowed five hits while striking out 10.

In the nightcap, the Lady Muleriders took an early lead on a bases-clearing triple by Joella Bayles in the first inning. SAU added single runs in the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead through the first three innings.

Game two starting pitcher Taylor Clifton (1-3) was sharp for the Lady Muleriders as she allowed just two hits and struck out seven batters in her complete-game victory. One of the two hits surrendered by Clifton was a RBI double in the top of the fourth inning.

The Lady Muleriders will now head to Bentonville, Ark. to participate in the UAM 7-State Classic starting on Friday, February 15th. First up for the Lady Muleriders in the classic will be Fort Hayes State with a first-pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
