SAU Softball splits with West Florida on final day of UWF Crossover Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game One Box Score -- Game Two Box Score

PENSACOLA
, Fla. – The Southern Arkansas softball team concluded their time at the University of West Florida (UWF) Crossover Invitational on Sunday afternoon by earning a split against the host institution, UWF. In earning the split, SAU captured the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 4-1, but fell in game two by a score of 10-1.

Game one was a prototypical pitcher's duel through the first four innings as both teams managed just four hits combined, while each were also held off the scoreboard. In that time, SAU's staring pitcher Hanna Gill was virtually un-hittable as she struck out four batters and surrendered just one hit.

The game would break open in the top of the fifth inning as they Lady Muleriders exploded for four runs on four hits. Lauren Witzke began the frame with a double to left-centerfield. In the next at-bat, a single by Brittany Wood advanced Witzke to third base while Wood took second on the throw.

Batting with two runners in scoring position and no outs, Kelsey Fisher stepped in and drove in Witzke on a sacrifice fly. Wood would also advance to the third base on the play. A fielder's choice for Mackenzie Spanko plated Wood from third and gave the Lady Muleriders a 2-0 lead.

Following a sacrifice bunt that moved Spanko to second, Ashley Quintana chased Spanko home with a RBI single through the right side. One batter later, the Lady Muleriders scored their fourth run of the inning on a throwing error by UWF.

The Argonauts (3-1) would answer back in the bottom of the frame as they scratched across a run on a pair of hits. UWF would manage only more hit in the game as Gill went into shutdown mode in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win for the Lady Muleriders.

Game two would take on a much different feel, especially early, as the Argonauts scored five runs on eight hits over the first three innings of play. Conversely, the Lady Muleriders scored one run on two hits over that same time.

UWF would keep their offense rolling as they scored three more runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead. SAU would eventually surrender two more runs as the Argonauts took game two by a score of 10-1.
