Muleriders upended by Union

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas baseball team had their seven-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday as Union University came to Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field and swept the non-conference doubleheader by scores of 4-3 and 7-2.

The opening game of the afternoon was a pitcher's duel early and moved at a brisk pace until the bottom of the fifth inning. To that point in the game, Union held a 1-0 lead and both teams combined for just five hits.

Union notched that early lead in the top of the first inning as the Bulldogs' (3-5) Cole McAdams singled to drive in Jim Martin from second base. That first inning run would be charged to the Muleriders' (12-5) starting pitcher Philip Menou.

Menou (2-1) would settle in after the first inning as the right-hander allowed just one hit over the next five innings.

With Menou in a rhythm, the Muleriders tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scratched across their first run of the game on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Jason Dahl to score Brady Capshaw.

In the following inning, the Muleriders took advantage of two Bulldog errors to score a pair of runs and take a 3-1 lead. Menou would come back on the mound in the top of the seventh inning looking to net the complete game victory.

The Bulldogs, however, would rally for three runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead. William Townsend singled down the left field line to start the bottom of the seventh and then was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Dahl, but Townsend would be stranded at second base as the Bulldogs' Justin Bryan recorded the final two outs.

Game two favored the Bulldogs as they scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Blake Sullivan. Similar to Menou in the previous game, Sullivan (0-1) got into a rhythm on the mound as he tossed scoreless frames in the second, third, and fourth innings.

In the middle of Sullivan's shutdown innings, the Muleriders would pull to within a run as Dahl hit a RBI double in the third inning to score Ryan Bell.

The Bulldogs then added to their lead by scoring four runs across the fifth and sixth innings. Another single run in the top of the seventh inning pushed their lead out to 7-1.

After two relatively quick outs in the bottom of the frame, the Muleriders started a rally as Townsend doubled to left field. Dahl then picked up his third RBI of the day as he singled to right field to score Townsend. A single by Johnny Garrett and a hit-by-pitch taken by Capshaw loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the on-deck circle. A flyout in the next at-bat, however, ended the game.

The Muleriders will now hit the road for their first conference series away from home as they will take on Ouachita Baptist starting at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1st.
