MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas softball team opened up play in the Great American Conference in style as the Lady Muleriders took both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Arkansas Tech by scores of 4-0 and 3-2.
In the opening game, the Lady Muleriders (10-8, 2-0 GAC) got a spectacular pitching performance from
Hanna Gill as she allowed just two hits while striking out eight en route to earning her first complete-game shutout victory of the season.
Gill, who did not surrender a hit after the second inning, was given all the runs of support she would need in the bottom the fourth inning as the Lady Muleriders scored two runs in the frame. Gill would then be spotted two more runs of support in the fifth inning as the Lady Muleriders took advantage of three Golden Suns' (4-7, 0-2 GAC) errors.
After being shut out in the opening game, the Golden Suns came back in the nightcap of the doubleheader and grabbed an early 2-0 lead after plating single runs in the first and second innings. Both runs, which were unearned, were charged against SAU starting pitcher
Taylor Clifton.
The Lady Muleriders would eventually tie the game up at four-all in the fourth inning as
Joella Bayles drove in
Kelsey Fisher on a groundout to first base. An inning prior, the Lady Muleriders got a RBI single from
Lauren Witzke to score their first run of the game.
Now with the game tied, the Golden Suns threatened to regain a lead as Amy Kilpatrick lead off the top of the fifth inning with a double to right-centerfield. A groundout in the next at-bat moved Kilpatrick to third base and prompted a call to the bullpen by Southern Arkansas. Coming on in relief of Clifton would be Gill. Gill would do her job in relief as she stranded Kilpatrick on third base after collecting a strikeout and a popup to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, the Gill would find herself in line for the win as the Lady Muleriders scored the go-ahead run on a RBI single to centerfield by
Brittany Wood. Wood's RBI would stand as Gill came back into the circle in the seventh inning and retired the side in order to pick up her second win of the day.
The Lady Muleriders and Golden Suns will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday, February 24th. First-pitch is scheduled for noon.
