BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas softball team concluded its time in the UAM 7-State Regional Classic with a dramatic 3-2 win over Missouri Western State University and a 7-0 shutout victory over Southwest Baptist University on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Park.

The dramatics of the Lady Muleriders' (6-8) win against Missouri Western came on the game's final play.

With two outs, and the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Giffons' (7-3) Sarah Elliot singled up the middle off of Southern Arkansas starting pitcher Hanna Gill. On the base hit by Elliot, Brooke Schaben, who was on second base, raced around third and headed home to tie the game up at 3-all, but SAU's centerfielder Courtney Hudgins came up firing and the freshman gunned down Schaben at the plate to preserve the 3-2 win for the Lady Muleriders.

Prior to the late-inning threat by Missouri Western, the Lady Muleriders held firm control of the game through the first five innings. In that time, the Lady Muleriders captured a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and second innings, and Gill held the Griffons to just one hit.

The bottom of the sixth inning would be when the Griffons would get to Gill as they platted a pair of runs on two hits to tie the game up at 2-all. In the next half inning, Ashley Quintana would put the Lady Muleriders back on top for the final time as her double drove in Joella Bayles.

In the second game of the day, the Lady Muleriders jumped all over Southwest Baptist quickly as they took a 7-0 lead through the first two innings of play. The early lead would be maintained by starting pitcher Taylor Clifton as she worked 4.2 innings of shutout ball before giving way to Gill. Gill would close out the game, and preserved the shutout for the Lady Muleriders as she surrendered just two hits while striking out five over the games' final 2.1 innings.

Offensively, in the game against Southwest Baptist, four Lady Muleriders recorded two or more hits with Sarah Higginbotham going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Taylor Guin was 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI while both Bayles and Quintana were 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Lady Muleriders will now head back home as they are set to play host to Kansas Newman College for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, February 20th. First-pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
