BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas softball team fell victim to the homerun four times on day two of the UAM 7-State Regional Classic as the Lady Muleriders lost 8-0 to Northwest Missouri and 3-1 to No. 18 Emporia State.
The Lady Muleriders' (4-8) first game of the day against Northwest Missouri was a closely-contested game until the top of the seventh inning when the Bearcats (5-0) exploded for seven runs in the frame. To that point, the Lady Muleriders trailed 1-0 after allowing a run in the top of the second inning.
That game-changing inning by the Bearcats started with consecutive singles off of the Lady Muleriders' starting pitcher
Taylor Clifton. Following the consecutive hits, the Bearcats sent Anastaszia Roseberry to the plate as a pinch-hitter. Roseberry responded to the call off the bench as she hit a three-run homerun out to right field. Four batters later, the Bearcats' Kristen Uthe hit another three-run homerun to extend their lead out to 7-0. The Bearcats would add a run in the inning and eventually won by a score of 8-0.
In the second game of the day, the Lady Muleriders rebounded from their earlier loss as they played well against a tough opponent in No. 18 Emporia State. Neither team would score through the first three innings as the two starting pitchers combined to allow just two hits during that time.
The scoreless tie would be broken by the Hornets (3-0) in the bottom of the fourth inning as they hit a RBI double off of Lady Mulerider starter
Hanna Gill. Gill would get out of the inning without further damage, but the sophomore would surrender solo homeruns in the fifth and sixth innings as she would be hit with loss in the game.
In between the two Emporia homeruns, however, SAU's
Sarah Higginbotham parked a homerun of her own as she took a pitch out to left field for a solo homerun in the top of the sixth inning.
The Lady Muleriders will remain in Bentonville, Ark as they are set to play two more games on Sunday, February 17th. Their first game will be against Missouri Western State at 11:00 am and their second game will be against Southwest Baptist at 3:00 pm.
