MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas volleyball team flexed their offensive muscle in a straight sets sweep over Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday night in the W.T. Watson Center.
For the match, the Lady Muleriders (16-14, 6-7 GAC) totaled an impressive 50 kills and hit at a clip of .324 as they dominated the match offensively. The .324 team attack percentage against the Cotton Blossoms (12-18, 2-11 GAC) was the Lady Muleriders second-best hitting performance of the season. Fueling the high attack percentage was the volume of kills SAU hammered home as they recorded at least 16 kills in each set.
The opening set was the closest of the evening as there were seven tie scores and two lead changes. In that set, each team was efficient on their offensive attack as SAU totaled 17 kills on 36 total attacks and committed six errors for an attack percentage of .306. Meanwhile UAM totaled 13 kills on 30 total attacks and committed just one error for an attack percentage of .400. Set one eventually went to the Lady Muleriders as they closed out the set with a 5-1 run to earn the 25-20 win.
Set two was not in doubt for long as the Lady Muleriders went on a 6-0 run after the Cotton Blossoms too the set's first point. The Lady Muleriders would not surrender the lead they gained during that run as they cruised to a 25-13 win.
Set three saw the Lady Muleriders race out to an early 7-3 lead, but a 4-1 run by the Cotton Blossoms brought the set to within a point, 8-7. Midway through the set, UAM went on another mini run, this one a 4-0 run to take a one-point lead, 12-11. Three points later, the set was knotted at 13-all. From there, the Lady Muleriders went on a 4-0 run of their own to take the lead and control of the set. SAU would not let this lead fall away as they eventually took the set 25-18.
The 3-0 match win is the Lady Muleriders seventh of the season.
Statistically, the Lady Muleriders were led offensively by
Courtney Geesing as she had a match-high 13 kills. Behind Geesing was
Hailey McNee with 10 kills.
Cambria Martin,
Amanda Monge, and
Logan Tolbert also contributed heavily on offense as Martin ended with nine kills and Monge and Tolbert ended with eight kills each.
Setter
Gabby Clark passed out 45 of the team's 48 assists in the match.
Defensively, SAU totaled five blocks (all assisted) and came away with 46 digs.
Lauren Woods led the team in digs with 16 while Clark posted her 10th double-double of the season as she came away with 10 digs.
The Lady Muleriders will now prepare for their final home match of the season as they close out the regular season against GAC-rival Arkansas Tech on Thursday, November 14. With it being the final home match of the season, the SAU volleyball team will pay tribute to its four seniors,
Gabby Clark,
Courtney Geesing,
Cambria Martin, and
