Muleriders Drop Two on Opening Day

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (0-2, 0-0 GAC) dropped their first two contests today against the Pittsburg State University Gorillas (2-0, 0-0 MIAA) in the first two contests of both teams 2026 season.
 
Game 1
The Gorillas broke the ice first in game one scoring one run in the top of the first inning. The Muleriders then answered in the bottom of the first as Wyatt Fielding hit his first home run of his Muleriders career to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second inning. After a scoreless second inning from both teams, the Gorilla's offense heated up scoring three in the third and three in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Pitt took an 8-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning scoring one run by the Muleriders answered in the bottom of the frame. After a Preston Smith leadoff double to begin the inning, Jordan Owns laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Smith followed by a sac fly by Dylan Broadway as Smith scored. The lone run was all the Muleriders could push across in the inning as Pitt now led 8-2 after the seventh inning. PSU tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth as the Muleriders offense went cold again eventually losing the game 11-2.
 
Game 2
Game two began just like game one with the Gorillas pushing an early run across to take a 1-0 lead after the top of the first. The Muleriders were held scoreless in the bottom of the frame and Easton Hurley trotted back out to the mound in the top of the frame and threw two scoreless innings keeping a hot PSU offense at bay. The Gorillas scored a run in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead, but SAU came back in the bottom of the inning. Jacob Lang came to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning and hit his first home run of his SAU career to break up a no hitter and cut the PSU lead in half, 2-1 Pitt. The homerun was it for the Muleriders in the fourth and the Gorillas tacked on 11 in the top of the fifth to take a commanding lead. The Muleriders fell short in game two by a final score of 14-1.

The Muleriders will conclude their weekend series with Pitt State Monday, February 2nd. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
