Muleriders Split Doubleheader to Open Conference Play

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (5-5, 1-1) split their doubleheader today against the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison (6-3, 1-1) losing the first game and winning the second game in extra inning walk-off fashion.

Game 1
The Bison would strike first in game one as Jeremy Adorno struggled early walking his first two hitters of the day and then collecting a strike-out. After another walk to load the bases with one out, the Bison would score the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Adorno would then wiggle out of the jam with another strikeout to end the inning and strand two Bison.

After a tough start to the game for Adorno, he would settle in putting up six consecutive scoreless innings and would ride a no-hitter into the top of the eighth inning. With two outs in the top of the eighth inning, OBU would extend their lead by scoring two runs off of a DJ Van Atten double to take a 3-0 lead.

The Muleriders' offense would struggle in the first game but would end up outhitting the Bison two hits to one. The Bison's pitching staff proved to be too much in the shut-out win and OBU would win game number one by a final score of 3-0. Despite the rough start for Adorno, he would end his day with 7.2 innings pitching, and nine strikeouts, with his only hit surrendered being in the top of the eighth inning.

Game 2
The Muleriders offense would find their groove early against the Bison in game two getting on the board first as Brandon Nicoll smashed a triple to left center field scoring Jaden Woolbright giving SAU a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Bison would respond quickly in the top of the second inning with two runs to take the lead, 2-1.

After a scoreless third inning for both teams, SAU would knot the game at two as Josh Phillips belted a leadoff homerun over the right field wall, 2-2. Oklahoma Baptist would retake the lead in the top of the sixth inning scoring one run, 3-2. With only seven scheduled innings in game two, the Muleriders would come to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with only six outs to play with.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Tyler Abrego would draw a walk setting the stage for Peyton Ballard. Ballard would muscle a double over the left fielder's head and Abrego would motor all the way around to score from first base knotting the game again at 3-3. After a pressure-filled seventh inning for Austin Adair on the mound, both teams would put up zeros to send the game to extra innings.

After a three up and three down top of the eighth for Adair, the Muleriders would come to bat with a chance to walk it off. Jayden Hill led off the bottom of the eighth inning reaching on an error by the first baseman. Carter Claerhout then stepped to the plate pinch hitting for Mikey McGinnis and single to the second baseman to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a Grant Roosma strike out for the first out of the inning a wild pitch would send the runners to second and third base with one out. Tyler Abrego would proceed to be hit by a pitch loading the bases for Peyton Ballard. Ballard would reach on a fielders choice as the Bison cut the run down at the plate and Trace Shoup would come to the plate looking to play hero in game two. Shoup would battle hard throughout the at-bat and eventually win the battle working a bases-loaded walk to score Claerhout and win the game for the Muleriders, 4-3.

Austin Adair would be lights out on the mound for the Muleriders in game two after coming in in the top of the second inning for starter Joshua Flaugher as he suffered an injury after being hit by a line drive earlier in the inning. Adair would record his longest outing of the season throwing 6.2 innings collecting seven strikeouts and only allowing one run and one walk earning his second win of the season.
