MAGNOLIA, Ark. – For the final time this season, Southern Arkansas took to Dawson Field inside the Dr. Margaret Downing Softball Complex and the Muleriders made the most of senior weekend by sweeping Southwestern Oklahoma in Great American Conference action to move to 27-14 overall and 16-10 in league play. The Muleriders won Friday's opener 3-2, claimed Saturday's first contest 5-0 and capped the weekend with a 3-2 walk-off win.
In the opener,
Sydney Ward fired five innings of four-hit softball with just one earned run and four strikeouts.
Brinson Rogers closed out the final two innings facing just one over the minimum to earn her first save of the season. Sacrifice flies by
Haley Nillen (1
st) and
Gracie King (3
rd) opened scoring for SAU and a cushion run was added in the fourth as a fielding error resulted in a third SAU tally.
In Saturday's first contest, a run-scoring double from the bat of
Morgan McAlexander and an RBI single by
Bella Angelo opened scoring with two runs in the second inning to back Rogers' start. The right-hander went the distance for her eleventh win of the season allowing just two hits and two walks while fanning six. Nillen emptied a crowded base path with a three-run double into left center field to conclude scoring as SAU captured the series with a 5-0 decision.
The finale offered a little more drama. SAU jumped out to a 2-0 lead through three innings as
Regan Dillon scored on a fielding error in Nillen's first plate appearance of game three in the first inning and
Jenna Huey doubled in
Ariana Rolle for the second run. SWOSU scored twice in the sixth inning via a throwing error and a passed ball. The effort exited Ward who has scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run with three strikeouts. Rogers pitched the seventh to earn the win after Huey dropped a single down the right field line, her third hit of the game to score
Ava Dunn from second and cap the Muleriders' weekend with a sweep.
All 11 Mulerider seniors, Ward, Nillen, King, Rolle, McAlexander, Dunn,
Kamryn Moctezuma,
Demi Lindsey,
Cailynn Simms,
Kate Faber and
Madyson Pogue, saw action on Saturday.
SAU turns its attention to Tuesday in Monticello as the Muleriders are set to face Arkansas-Monticello twice beginning at 2 p.m. The first contest counts toward the league standings. Live coverage links are available at
