ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Seven strong innings and ten strikeouts from junior
Nate June and a four-hit, four-RBI night from junior
Jaden Woolbright highlighted #8 Southern Arkansas' 9-1 midweek victory over Henderson State in Tuesday night nonconference action from Clyde Berry Field. The win is the 19
th for SAU, its ninth on the road and 12
th away from Magnolia and evens the season series with the Reddies at two games each.
June delivered in a big way for the Muleriders (19-7). He faced just five over the minimum with the Reddies' lone extra base hit against him resulting in their only scoring tally off of the junior arm. That early, short-lived advantage came in the HSU second and in the following five bottom innings, June worked 1-2-3 frames in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, tossed around runners at the corners in the sixth and at one point sat down eight-straight Reddie batters. He recorded ten punchouts and did not allow a free pass.
Micah Burke took over for June in the eighth and continued the impressive effort on the mound by SAU as he faced the minimum with three fly outs, two groundouts and a strikeout.
Good things happened for the Muleriders with Woolbright at the plate. The junior homered in the top of the third to answer a solo blast by the Reddies in the previous half inning, he doubled in a pair of runs in the fourth to push SAU out to a 4-1 lead which preceded a wild pitch in that at bat that chased home a run and he singled in run in the fifth to make it 7-1 SAU.
SAU also plated runs via a fifth-inning fielding error that scored two and bases loaded walks to
Brandon Nicoll and
Will Richardson for the eighth and ninth runs in the pre-stretch seventh.
SAU walked eight times, led by three from the league's leader in
Grant Roosma, and was hit-by-pitch five times. Woolbright was responsible for all three of SAU's extra-base hits and four of the team's six RBI. Woolbright, along with
Trace Shoup and
Carter Claerhout all scored twice.
