SAU falls at Oklahoma Baptist with solid defensive performance

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Southern Arkansas wrapped up its conference-opening trip to the Oklahoma City area and exit the Sooner State with its second loss in league play after the Muleriders fell on the road to Oklahoma Baptist, falling to 5-3 with the 57-64 loss.

SAU continued to excel defensively, as the group has been doing, but the group's downfall did not come due to field goal percentage. The Muleriders' fouls assisted the Bison as the unit accounted for 16 personal fouls compared to OBU's 11 fouls. Due to the foul trouble, Oklahoma Baptist was able to make four more free throws than SAU. While OBU recorded a worse shooting percentage, had just a couple more shots made than the Muleriders.

For the vast majority of contest, there was plenty of tight competition as OBU was up by just two at half (33-35). Southern Arkansas shutdown the Bison offense in period three, allowing just eight points compared to SAU's 12. However, OBU's offense turned it on in the fourth with 22 points to the Muleriders' 13.

Once again playing a huge part in the Southern Arkansas defense was Marlee Bright. The junior recorded six steals for her fourth game with at least five steals. The Amity, Arkansas native was also responsible for five rebounds and six assists.

The Blue and Gold's leading scorer was graduate student Addy Tremie. The Sulphur, Louisiana descendant accounted for 20 points, a season high. The grad nearly recorded  her first double-double of her career as she accounted for nine rebounds and set a new career-high for boards in a game.

Nearly logging back-to-back double-double games was Elena Lijo-Rodriguez as the junior from A Coruna, Spain score 12 points and posted eight rebounds.

Southern Arkansas will be back in action next Thursday in Arkadelphia, Arkansas as the Muleriders will take on Ouachita Baptist at 5:30 PM. The following Saturday, SAU will face Arkansas Tech in Magnolia inside the W.T. Watson Center at 1:00 PM.
