SEARCY, Ark. - The Southern Arkansas Men's and Women's Tennis teams both earned big victories on Saturday in Searcy as the SAU Men topped #49 Harding 5-2 in an ITA top 50 matchup to keep its tournament hopes alive, while the SAU Women beat Harding 4-3 for the Muleriders' first Great American Conference victory of the season. The Mulerider Men improved to 7-12 overall and finished MIAA-GAC South Division play at 1-2. The Mulerider Women moved to 8-12 and evened their league record to 1-1.
The SAU Women took the doubles points as the pairs of Sarah Roy and Inna Serpukhova at line three and Annika Berrendorf and Lena Milosevic at line two each won 6-2 over their respective opponents to stake the Muleriders to an early advantage.
Greta Wallin won 6-4, 6-3 over Ashley Nilsson at No. 4 and with the match standing at 2-1, Milosevic handled Karli Roux 7-6 (5), 6-4 at No. 2 to send the Muleriders to match point. In a 3-2 match, Roy put away Grace Dodd 6-2, 7-6 (5) at No. 1 to give SAU its first ever win over the Lady Bisons in Searcy.
For the Mulerider Men, doubles victories by Adrian Gheorge and Matthew Tennant at No. 2 and Gabriel Breitenmoser and Ole Valkyser at No. 3 staked SAU to a 1-0 lead.
With the match tied at 1, Breitenmoser won 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 over Jaydon van Vreden at No. 5 to regain the lead. At No. 4, it was Tim Fischer that won in three over Milosh Petrovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
It was Mathieu Wierniezky at No. 3 who defeated Cian Mikkelsen 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 to give the Muleriders the match and the team's first win in Searcy and their third-straight over the Bisons. Playing out, Sander Jans picked up a statement win at like one as the top 25 ranked player beat No. 15 Dani Ortiz 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.
The Southern Arkansas Women face a busy week with a pair of home matches on Tuesday (HSU at noon; OUA at 4), a single home match on Wednesday (SOSU at 2:30) and a pair of battles over the weekend at the Live Oak Tennis Courts to close out the regular season (see below).
